Ex Diplomatic Omegas
« on: 08 March 2008, 13:18:41 »

Has anyone ever bought or got one of the special Omegas used to ferry politicians and important people around?

I presume they have bullet proof glass and armour etc and chipped engines, uprated suspension,LSD's. Or are they just so heavy that they are worse than a standard car!!

If you have bullet proof glass, its pointless unless you armour it.  Then you need to dramatically adjust gearing and suspension due to weight....

Ex Dip Omegas tend to be Elite 3.2's but without the badging and 17" wheels (usually run on CD Alloys with run flat tyres). No LSD, standard Auto box etc, Some have additional underbody protection.

Internally there are usually a couple of switches / holes either side of the handbrake for front and rear flashers and fitting of a Nokia Cark91 with privacy handset (HSU1). Some of the earlier models had the CCRT2008 fitted and hence no Nokia kit.

Some of the new Jags that are now being used now appear to have bullet proof glass but i've not managed to get close enough yet to look any closer.

LOL

Nothing to worry about! I'm actually involved in IT but where I work happens to be the constituancy for a rather well known MP hence we have regular visits (They steal my parking space  ;D), often get chatting to the 'drivers' (though they are a little more than that  ;)) so have had a nose around the cars before. They now seem to have shifted over to Jags and the security seems to be a little tighter.

I also have a friend who works for Vauxhall SVO so knows a little on the subject.

I used to drive one, they are not all armoured it depends on the threat level on the individual VIP, The armoured omega's where all police spec mv6's and could take a 7.62 round, tyre's are all run flats  and the engines where not up-rated only the standard 3.0 V6 was fitted we still have 5 armoured omegas on the fleet 3 right hand drive and 2 left hand drive which have just arrived back from overseas and are opel badged

And the non-armoured omegas where just standard 2.5 and 2.6 cdx models

Was the gearing adjusted due to the extra weight?

The ones that used to visit us (replaced by Jags now) were two 3.2's, one saloon and one estate.

They were both Auto and visually looked pretty standard, you only notice the differences close up.
