Omega 2.2DTi engine noise, blue/grey smoke HELP!!!
« on: 27 September 2011, 19:43:33 »

Good evening all, I havent had need to ask for help for a while but my new Omega is doing my head in!!
Ok, i will start from the begining and be as honest as I can.
My old silver Omega has been dropping to bits for a while now but I realy love her so I decided to buy another one to use while I fix all the problems on the silver one over the winter. I wanted a diesel again and saw a black 2.2DTi for sale with a suspected blown turbo, it was cheap and had recently had new brakes a new clutch and new tyres so I thought id give it a go as used turbos aren't expensive and to be honest i doubted it was the turbo. The previous owner said the battery was almost flat and that he couldnt get it started, so when we put a jump pack on it we were suprised when it fired up and seemed ok. Driving home the engine was quiet and quite lively compared to my silver one but then it started to go flat and the engine management light came on and the oil light started flickering so we stopped and got the breakdown to bring us home. When we got back the car started again and no warning lights were on so I drove it round the block and home on to the drive. The next morning I had a good look under the bonet and there was a lot of oil around the injector area and the EGR valve so I gave the area a good spray with gunk and removed and cleaned the EGR valve. I checked the oil levels and found that it was well over filled with oil! I wondered if the oil light was flickering because it was warning of over fill? (dont know if they do that?) anyway, I changed the oil filter and dropped and changed the oil. The area round the oil filter was covered in old oil so in my wisdom I decied to use the power washer on a low setting to clean the block. I realise this was probably a bad idea but with the gunk it cleaned up a treat. The car started after ok and i took it for a spin round the block but again the engine light came on and it went flat again so I though maybe the turbo is on its way. I decided to get a friend who has a garage business to put tech 2 on the car just to be sure the fault didnt lie elsewhere. He couldnt come for 5 days and  so on the moring before he came I tried to start the car. It wouldn't start for ages then when it did it sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders -Great! when my friend arrived at dinner time it woulnt start at all, and Tech 2 showed dozens of faults so he had to clear them all and get the car started for a fresh set of results. Eventualy we got it to start but it was shaking and clattering and yet didnt show any faults on Tech 2!!!! My mate said the fuel smelt wrong and was contaminated so i drained the tank and put fresh fuel in and charged the battery. A few hours later it started easily so I thought the fuel was the problem but on reving the engine it sounded like it was knocking and there is loads of blue/light grey smoke from the exhaust. It feels like its running on 3 cylinders and i dont know if its a big/little end or an injector or if I've damaged the diesel pumps ECU with the water and upset the timing or what has happened but its not the turbo and when I drove it at purchase it was quiet and normal. I have posted 2 videos on YouTube if anyone can view them and help I would appreciate it!

Where do we start here.
There is a few things that can cause this.
I suspect the previous owner put petrol in and ran the engine or as you say the turbo bearings are gone. Take the intake hose of at the manifold if its soaking in oil then yes turbo.
The other is to much oil and the engine has hydruliced damaging valves/piston rings.
Or its ran big/small ends.

i have herd of this story before, but not with a mig. but an other car, and yes someone had put desil in petrol or the other way about cant rember, but yes same probs, maybee a good idea to just start again, flush engien oil out and put new stuff in flush fuel and put new fillters in, then get a good look at that turbo maybe get second hand one put on and try that,at least that shorts the list down a bit , if the car is worth it that is. let us know how you get on good luck.

Thanks guys. Is there an easy way of checking any potential damage? (Compression test etc) don't want to have to strip the engine down really. It's so anoying as it sounded absolutely fine when I first drove it. I'll drop the oil again and see if it's got any metal in it and I'll check that turbo too. Forgot to mention that it revs freely, I've briefly taken it up to 4000rpm so the diesel pump is working (had that problem on my other omega). Also some times there is a metal on metal shrill briefly when I rev it. And lastly it went quiet for about 2 seconds earlier today!!
 :( :(

This can be two things the timing is out or the oil lift pipe in the sump is blocked

Hi
I cant help thinking that it is unlikely to be a mechanical damage problem (rings valves etc.) From what you have said, it occasionally puts itself right. Busted valves etc. don't normally correct themselves at all.  Blue/grey smoke is unburnt diesel which is consistent with running on 3/too much fuel  etc.
I guess you are thinking about the electronics in the fuel pump when you suspect the pressure washer has had an adverse effect? With the excellent weather we have been enjoying lately it could just dry out; so maybe try it in a day or two? When the light comes on does it not store a fault code?

I watched the videos.. they are  alarming! What is this oil around the injectors? is it oil or diesel and road grime?
So no real answers for you, but a few thoughts that hopefully help

oh man!! finally got a good enough connection to watch the video, got to say that sounds to me and looks like a duff injector at first i thouht the tip of injector had broken off, but if you say it sometimes clears itself, then it cannot be, so i would whip the injectors out and have them tested, :y
