Seized Caliper and Oil change
« on: 28 September 2011, 10:11:14 »

Thanks to Albs for his enquiry about the calipers - looks like we can go ahead with that :y

Can anyone give me their opinion on the likelihood of said seizure being caused by brake oil change?
Took the car to my usual mechanic and got them to change the Oil as braking had become spongy. (posted on old forum).

Is it just an unhappy coincidence or could the seizure have been caused by the oil change?
(Hadn't driven car since Saturday when work done til yesterday eve, when it seized)
My car is 13 years old and calipers are not immortal, but if I need to talk with the garage, I'd be grateful for any heads up info prior to doing so.

I have long suspected there is a connection between doing work in a particular area and related parts going belly up shortly afterwards.  But I don't think is is a case of "caused by" - rather "triggered by".  That is to say the part was about to fail anyway and the work just hastened the inevitable.

Frinstance my HBV died a couple of weeks after changing the coolant on mine - but I don't think I changed the coolant incompetently.   8)

Sorry to ask this but do mean the brake pistons are not moving?
If you remove the caliper leaving the brake pipe untouched, get someone to push the foot brake... This should ease them out, even if you have to give them a hand :)

Just make sure that you put something between the pads when the foot brake is operated otherwise you could easily push one or other of the pistons out of its bore resulting in a brake fluid shower!  :y It's probably best to do this one piston at a time ie use a G clamp to hold one piston in place while you try to ease the other out - then swap over the clamp.  ;)

Are seal kits readily available for the calipers, as I'm thinking of overhauling the front ones on the Elite?
