To fix or replace?
« on: 01 October 2011, 02:01:37 »

Mine is getting tired, love it as I do, it needs service, cambelt, pads & discs, & probably a new rear o/s shock judging by the fluid falling out of it!

01 3.0 Elite Bose Leather, but with approx 150k, and I don't have time to do any of it myself- I have a friendly mechanic, but still think it's maybe not worth it as bodywork is getting shabby & interior is possibly beyond cleaning.

So, anyone guess what this'll cost to fix? (not cosmetics) & what it may be worth as a scrapper to anyone on here, as oppose to a replacement y or newer in slightly less than OOF condition?

ps. just had new water pump!

It all depends on how much you feel its "worth" to you, tbh.

I have a mini facelift '99 elite estate. She's getting on a bit, but she's my pride & joy. I had wellung666 from here spend 2 days working on her. He changed both cam covers, cambelt, water pump aux belt and full service. It took me the last 7 months saving up to have it done....was it "worth it"?   Def yes.
It crippled me financially, but def worth it  :y

Cars this age, monitory value is far outweighed by usefulness IMO. These cars are worth alot more on the continent, just not worth much wonga here.

Another omega may well need all that doing anyway...or another make altogether, what else is there...?

Although a newer omega is always nice IMO. But what will it need?

IMO it would depend on what you want to make of the car.

You say bodywork is scruffy & interior is beyond cleaning, so do you just want a reliable workhorse where appearance does not matter. If that is the case, then doing all the mechanical work is the way to go, you know that all the major issues are sorted. But seems like a few things need to be done ,so gonna cost a few quid :'( :'( :'(

On the other hand ,  there are lots of omegas out there for sale and some good buys too.My 3.0 FL elite on a W plate  was £850,searched 6 weeks to find it though, was looking for a clean well maintained 3 litre model, fully loaded with CID etc,& with a recent cambelt change. was up for £1100 . . .   bit of Essex Boy banter got it down to £850 ;D ;D ;D

You have to weigh up what your outlay on the bits that need doing on your exisiting miggy are going to come to against trying for a "new" one.

You would get £250 weighing the old one in at Rochford scrap at the moment, don't know what the breakers on here would be willing to pay though.

To sum it all up Adrian,   being honest & without wanting to offend you :-[ :-[ :-[, having seen your car and the cosmetic condition, I would go for a" newy", but take your time in searching one out.

Hope this helps your decision,  regards, Al,      PS. kettles always on if you wanna pop round  :y :y :y :y

Exactly... Look at yours, mine and TBE ;) All three were bought for top money, all 3 were low mileage, FSH cars, all 3 have cost money getting them right, excluding the LPG side, and AFAIK not one of them is finished yet ::) ;D

That said, I suppose not everyone is as fussy as us :-\

I've just paid out £550 on mine !!!!......

This consisted of a new cambelt, tensioners and water pump.......plus a brand new oil cooler, oil and filter change, and 5 litres of fresh red coolant. :y

A lot of money........but well worth it in my view. :y :y

All good points, many thanks

However, considering I spent only £900 to buy it, have spent very little (most of which was greatly helped by all here  :y :y), and given the milage, I should in theory be able to get one 2 years newer, with about 50k less on the clock, for pretty much the same money I feel- if I'm lucky & it goes the same way as the current one, I should hopefully get another 2 years minimum, for little further outlay

Chris- what else is there? Shame on you!!!!  ::)

As some know, this is my 3rd one, shame there's only 3 years worth of newer ones left!

Anyone guess at what I should be looking at to fix the mechanicals listed? Won't hold anyone to it!

You're probably looking at at least £400 in parts for genuine parts at TC prices, plus labour on top which will obviously vary depending on where you go, but there's a good days work there IMO.  :-\

Mine is getting tired, love it as I do . . . .

Exactly my situation a few weeks ago, mine had 180k and quite a few bits and pieces needing attention and fairly tatty general condition. Found a '52 V6 with just 53k (pretty sure that's genuine) and very good overall condition. I went ahead, got just £300 px on the old one, pretty much scrap value, but so far glad I did it.

I do fairly high mileage, so I'm hoping to get at least another 50k out of it. I don't skimp on servicing and maintenance, so should be ok.

We constantly ask the same question, at what point do you change?
Our old 2.0L Auto Estate is in very good condition for a 1998 car, has not let us down in 4 years, once originally sorted, and only needed the usual and expected serviceable items..... Car in use by swmbo every day and she loves it..... :y

We bought an 03 2.2, expensive but fsh etc etc and just pxed it at a substantial loss as it has been so unreliable, lots of parts replaced, would likely be a good car now but no way was swmbo going to run it, so we made the decision to keep what we know well and pay to keep her maintained and on the road...... :) :)
