Remember CBT lasts 3yrs only.  You need to take the direct access (and take test on 500+ bike) for a permenent licence.

125s probably a bit scary round here, due to fast roads - most current 125s bottom out around 60 ish.

If you want to scare yourself witless, fancy my ZX-10?

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

I used to own a 100cc with a GENUINE maximum of 80mph. Yes it was tuned and I started with the quickest - early GP100 disc brake model

SOme friends had 250s (last year of 250 learners) and my 100 kept up!

I can't see a 100cc bike keeping up with a 250cc.

Its like 2.5 Omega Vs 3.0....

3.0 will just walk away!

Depends on the make / 4 sroke or 2. I have a 2.5 car that no 3.0l Omega will keep up with, so you cant always compare direct engine size. :)

A good tuned, well running 100cc may beat a poorly running 250cc in the same way a good 2.5 can outrun a not-so-good 3.0....

I took my test on a borrowed KH250 in Nov 80 ( I intended to get it insured ..Honest  :-[) In the hour or so before my test that I had to practice in, I very nearly took a dive over the bars as I knocked the gears down 2 as I approached a roundabout :o!!! My GT250 had 6 gears & was 2 stroke - a slightly different riding style!

My first bike, a BSA Bantam 150 would do 80 miles,

Yes, my first was 2 stroke, I was in for a shock with engine braking when I got my first 4 stroke...

go direct access like tb says.if you go cbt/125 route you will regret it once the novelty has worn off (about a fortnight).i did my direct access on a cb500,like the one ten minutes from you and in my opinion it would be a perfect starter bike for a restricted budget.just like a car the throttle works both ways, but at least there is a little bit of potential performance available with the cb500  as you gain confidence. this time next year you will probably want an R1. :y

My first bike was a Honda SS50, I was the first year of 50's at 16. If I had been a year older I could have had a 250cc at 16 years.
Honda CB250 used to get me from Gosport to Durham most weekends over the Winter of 73 - 74 used to stop every 50 miles to warm up, Happy days :) :) :)

You do these sort of things when you are a Kid.
Warm Car now, though am looking for a bike.
Gospot to Durham for the Weekend, too bl**dy far, even in a Car, to do it regularly, must be an age thing. :D :D :D

Been there .... done that. I used to do loads of miles backwards & forwards from Rosyth to Bury or from Pompey to Bury & back in a week end. My 'best' time from Pompey Hard to H21's stomping ground was 6 & 1/2 hours in a hired Sierra Saphire. 0400 in Pompey ... 1030 in Rosyth  ::)  ::)  ::)

It never ceases to amaze me how these threads develop, very few seem to end on the original subject, the charm of oofing I guess. :y
