It's amazing how things go round. My lad is at the same shore establishment as Marie - HMS Sultan - learning how to be a WAFU Wet And *ery Useless. My best mate's (another ex Tiff) son has also been to the carears office & hopes to sign on in June/July.
In the 20 yrs since I've been in Civvy St things seem to have changed.... a lot.

My GT250 had 6 gears & was 2 stroke - a slightly different riding style!
:)My first bike was a Fizzy, then a Fantic Cabellero (or Frantics as we called 'em) then a DT175, then a new RD250DX (pre LC) then a KH400, craking bike, 2 stroke triple but the centre pot took a while to cut in when cold, usually on a roundabout with the throttle wide open then it'd scream & launch you whichever way you were facing @ the time. Woke me up in the mornings!!! Setting up 3 sets of points was no fun but to this day i love KH's. More recently had a 600 Bandit for a while, tried a mates 1200 but hard to keep the front down!!! Had a go on a gixer & a 900 'Blade, fast as break but i don't like the riding position of sportbikes. Also, never took a test so best left as happy memories. I'd love another KH though!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I used to own a 100cc with a GENUINE maximum of 80mph. Yes it was tuned and I started with the quickest - early GP100 disc brake model

SOme friends had 250s (last year of 250 learners) and my 100 kept up!

I can't see a 100cc bike keeping up with a 250cc.

Its like 2.5 Omega Vs 3.0....

3.0 will just walk away!
A good tuned, well running 100cc may beat a poorly running 250cc in the same way a good 2.5 can outrun a not-so-good 3.0....


Top end 250s were a bit quicker - they were Superdreams and an old Yamaha, my 100 was a LOT lighter and about 11bhp less, up to about 50 or 60 nothing in it

one youve done you CBT (lasts for 2 years) and then DAS.

Did my DAS 5 years ago now, and after saving up the pennys got me my ZX6R  :)

cb500`s are a good bike they`ve been around ages so theres plenty of spares and the engines are bullet proof just stay away from ex despatchers hacks and ex bike trainers(not well maintained) you might want to look at the kwacka er 500`s as well and the yamaha fazers..if it was me though i`d be looking at maybe a shaft driven bike like a gt550 or honda 650 deauville but thats just the despatcher in me coming out..if your gonna do motorway miles try for a bike with a fairing makes commuting a bit more easy espec on the neck muscles..try picking the used bike guide up from the news agents they have more than enough info on wot to look out for when buying and take someone knowledgeable bout bikes with ya dont let shiny bike syndrome catch ya out  :P good luck with it tunnie.. :y

Any of the 500cc twins are good - Kawasaki ER-5, Honda CB500 or Suzuki GS500.  The Kawasaki is probably easiest to ride, and has the lowest seat (not so much of an issue for you), and will be cheapest. You have to keep clean, as the finish isn't that great.  I used to frequently do 130m rund trip for work on my ER-5 - wouldn't want to go much further as when I arrived (65m) my arse was getting to the point of numbness.  CB500 more comfortable imho, but more expensive, but everyone has different views of comfort.

Also, if you want a shade more power, the SV-650 V-twin is a good first 'big bike', very forgiving.

Beyond that, the Hornet and Fazer 600cc - this are in effect an unfaired, detuned versions of the respective 600cc sports bikes.  No disrespect Tunnie, but you may want to wait a while before going to this level, based on my knowledge of your capabilities :)

And as I said, if you want to go pillion on the ZX-10, just let me know.  And bring your own nappies ;D  (seriously, I would be slow and cautious with you on the back).  Also, if you want to come for a drive with my giving commetry of whats going through my head with my 'biker head' on, thats fine - you need to start being far more alert than most of us are in the car :y

yes.......forget cbt,do direct access,if cb500 in decent nick and budget a bit tight then it would do fine for starters :y

I have enjoyed a biking career over the years:
Yamaha FS1E
Honda CB125T (incredible-revs!)
Honda Superdream (very-bland!)
Honda Seely/750 (nice-looker!)
Kawasaki Z1300 (way-too heavy)
Ducati 900SS (loved the engineering, but rubbish electrics!)
Guzzi Le Mans (lovely!)
Guzzi Spada (gorgeous!)

I miss it (only) on lovely, sunny-days; but here in North Wales it seems every weekend some (several, on one day recently) bikers die....I did my I.A.M course back in the 80`s but I think biking`s just too dangerous for me to enjoy now.  :'(

cant be as dangerous as flying a plane you built yourself debs ;D,seriously though i reckon you should buy another ducati the electrics are really good now,it just so happens that i have one for sale  ;D ;D ;D
