clit 1.4 cambelt broken
« on: 15 October 2011, 12:47:45 »

Sons car has a broken cambelt. It's a 1993 (K) 1.4 petrol.

He is 200 miles away so a bit difficult.  :(

Does anyone know if this is fatal or there is any clearance?

Thanks

Thanks Mark. That is what he was advised by the RAC man and the local indy where he was towed.

I just wanted to check if this one of those lucky cars where if it broke then it didn't matter.

If it's an 8V I'd chuck a belt on and see ;) ;)

All the 8V Vx units I've encountered have been OK (although none of them were 1.4s) :y :y

That said, if he doesn't have recovery then it's not going to be cheap :-X

There are loads of 8V power plants that dont survive, e.g. some Fords, Volvos and sadly most Renaults

Agreed... But all the Vauxhall ones I've encountered have been OK (even though the 1.8 is supposed to be interference ::)) so if it can be recovered home at no cost I'd be tempted to stick a new belt on (belt only) and see what happens... If it's OK then you can change the WP too (I think it CB driven and the tensioner on these) :y

A new belt is probably sub £10 from a factors ;)

Must add again though, I can't remember encountering a Vx 1.4 unit though so I may be wrong  ;)

On the Vx's the 1.8's were not interference engines and most of the 2.0's were not either with the exception of the 130 due to the high cam lift.

The 1.4's were though due to the combustion bowl design

In that case, I bow to your superior knowledge ;) ;D

Breakers for this one. It was his first car, cost £300 and has done him ok for 3 years so can't complain. Him & his GF are both able to walk to work so they can manage with one car from now on. He isn't really into cars & doesnt seem too bothered TBH.
