i found to help get the screws into place temp fixed tubes to the corners of the ecu and placed the screws in the holes and carfully allined the holes only took me 30 mins to refit took longer to get the ecu out fron the hole

IMHO the best option is a repair by someone like BBA Reman.  New is way too expensive, 2nd hand is risky .. it could be just about to fail, it might need a tech2 sesion to work. At least with a repair you know it will work and it has a 2 year warranty ...

Do BBA Reman have a good reputation ? Mine has just failed on the Bavarian Muck Wagon. Luckily it is a 10 minute job to remove 

I was extremely pleased with the service from them a few years back. After a phone coversation the ECU was couriered to them Monday, they phoned Wednesday with a price to fix which was paid by card, the unit was couriered back Friday, fitted saturday.. we left for French Holiday with the 'van on the back Monday !!! Total cost £130 with a 2 year warranty - price may have changed so worth a phone call .... google for them 

There are other folks who do the same .. MarkDTM prefers someone else .. but I can only speak as I found

I used reman very good, mailed ecu off to them, they then tested it and rang to tell me it was faulty and I paid by card and they fixed and posted it back to me in 2 days all for 116

I wish I knew the process they use to remove the gel stuff from inside of the ECU.I could possibly get the bonding work done if it wasnt for that hurdle.

yep agree with previous posts almost certainly the abs ecu,exactly the same symptoms,the only thing that worked was the rev counter,
mine was on a 01 2.2,got spare from twiglet,fitting and removing is a pain but well within the scope of a basic mechanic ,
you must have an angled head on youre screwdriver or like me i bought a flexible shaft screwdriver,
took about 2 hours in total,
took it to the local garage had it tech 2 and reset,job done,cost me £75 all up

Update on my ABS ECU problem:
Local garage identified codes 107 and code 88. Yaw Rates and Preliminary Precharge pump. The Traction control/DSC light is on permanently.
I sent the ECU off to BBA REMAN for testing, they indicated that the unit was faulty and could be repaired for £140 +vat. I paid over the phone and it was returned within 3 days.

I re-fitted the ECU and still the DSC light was on permanently. Local garage's computer showed the code 107 had gone, however the code 88 was still present. I had a search on the internet and a BMW Tech on Bimmerman stated that the code 88 was either the 'right rear wheel speed sensor' if this did not fix it, the ECU was faulty. I have had the speed sensor changed, still the DSC light is on
I have spoken to BBA Reman and they have asked me to return the unit to them for re-testing. Which I will on Monday, when I am home.
I will update as the situation changes

One question why do BMW's generate codes that do not make any sense, is this another ploy to fleece customers by forcing them to stay within their dealer network??
Answers on a postcard....

PS If this problem is fixed by BBA I will, for the benefit of all, put the fuse back in to allow my indicators to work

Check resistance between Battery negative and big brown wires on ABS plug, if it gives reading bigger that 0.6 Ohm then you got corroded wires somewhere. Common problem for BMW ABS, never had Vauxhall with this problem, but it is worth to check  for reconditioning i recommend http://www.ecutesting.com used many times, no problem at all.
