TB decided to do something about his, and visited the dealers. Seems the plastic pin surround that is set into the door card is available separately in various parts. Some cheap, some very expensive.
But the important part, the bit with the felt insert in is quite cheap, couple of quid. But what I found interesting was the felt bit that's supposed to stop the rattle is held in by a clip insert.

I wonder if removing the surround from the door card, unclipping the felt bit, roughing up the felt and re seating it, possibly rotated 90 degrees, would stop the rattle? For a good while anyway...?

Not a massive issue on the facelift....  But it is annoying.

Its odd, out of all 4 facelifts we have I can't say I've really experienced it

Would be nice to fix, it's the only rattle I have in my car.

But it's only really noticeable when the stereo is turned up and it starts to vibrate the pin.

The bit that needs changing is quite cheap. The clip in the bag under chrisgixer's hand...  ...well, FFS don't break it, it's over £20 ex vat

Gayboy, if you want to be ginuea pig, you are welcome to the old one. But if you break the clip that holds it in place, that's £20.45 + VAT

Mine are tapered towards the top.My 2002 breaker had square topped ones.Vaguely remember someone saying the square ones were less prone to rattling.

My 2000 facelift and my 2003 facelift both had rattly pins...

And its not the pin thats at fault, its the surround it sits in...

Both my face lifts had trouble. Used to be better locked, now better unlocked... But very irritating.

if it's the felt that's the issue, surely it's be fairly easy to make something to either  replace it.... or thicken it up .


(i foresee a bunch of people raiding their kid's fuzzy felt sets for a bit of felt to cut to shape....  )

Mine rattles like a bstard The door cards are from an early facelift and were modified using the trim pieces from the original later doorcards.
I didn't notice the felt piece, where exactly does that go?

Best solution I could come up with was to tension the lock rod with an elastic band, just loop it through itself around the rod where it goes through the membrane and  refit the upper screw on the trailing edge of thedoorcard so that it goes through the spare end of the band. 

Whilst I appreciate that it is a bit 'Heath Robinson', it does seem to work. I just need to sort the front passenger door one as that is the loudest noise inside the car.
