Air bag light.
« on: 07 November 2011, 00:13:09 »

I have a fault on my 2001 3.0 elite that will become a problem with the new MOT regs that are due to come in 2012.
The  airbag warning light is on, due to a faulty child seat detector transponder in the front passenger seat which would cost approx £300 + labour to replace.
Does anyone know how to disable/bypass this sensor so the airbag light will work normally ?  I have been told it is programmed into the ECU and cant be removed, but it is a rare option, not many Omegas had this fitted.

It may be easier to get a replacement ECU from a "standard" car. It wont be prorgammed to look for the seat sensor and as such wont be bothered if it isn't there.

Anyone breaking a FL car should be able to help.

The airbag ECU is located at the rear of the centre console - but you will have to remove the console to remove it.

Treat an airbag ECU with care, dont drop or manhandle it. Also, disconnect the battery for at least half an hour before doing anything in this dept.

I think you will find that an airbag light on will fail the current mot

I may be wrong, but I think you may be able to unplug the sensor at the side of the seat and then have the light turned off via any device which is capable of turning it off. Istr thats what I did with mine earlier this year. :-\
Wait for others too confirm or not though,as airbag related things are not something you want to just dive in and have a go. ;)

Not according to my MOT guy, the new regs come into force on 1/1/2012.

As for removing the fault with a Tech2, that doesn't work, even with the seat plugs undone, the light goes out then reappears after a few seconds.
Perhaps changing the airbag ecu would be the best option to try first, I can see a trip to the breakers yard coming up!
Any other comments would be most welcome though, guys.

I stand corrected, the airbag light is not currently an MOT failure

Yep, if the ABS ECU is configured  for that sensor to be present, it will always flag up a fault. AFAIK, configuring the ECU is a one-shot operation when the ECU is new, although I've never actually tried too hard to reconfigure one with a Tech 2..

Far too much 'dangle berries' in that sentence for me to respond responsibly  >:(

The airbag ecu should certainly detect if a sensor has failed or is missing, and will illuminate the bulb, the "off" switches usually substitute an alternative "load" to keep the ECU happy

or it could even be that it has stored some crash data (pothole / speed bump can do that) which Tech2 will not reset either (a solution for, I`m currently developing here)

Albs, I can have a look through the charred remains, to see if there is a good one left if needed,  :-X

but my gut feeling is that the fault lies elsewhere, or even with the disconnected sensor
