On the subject of winter tyres, using them in our current weather, would that harm them? They would get too hot?

nope .. I have driven them even at 18-20 celcius (ultragrip 7+) not a measurable wear.. from october to april last year.. and only 12-13 days were snowy..(monthly I traveled about 900 kms with them)

yep.. my mechanic uses winter tires whole summer ( I dont advice though) and winter.. bridgestones lasted 3 years (LM 30) ..

Wouldnt harm them at all. You might get a few hundred miles less from them than expected.

So 80 to 90 in say, 15 degree temp wont melt winter tyres?

They're rated to 118mph (most winter tyres being T or H rated), so they won't delaminate.. I bet you'd be wearing them out fairly quickly at that point, though.

I just checked and those Goodyears are surprisingly cheap, too. Bugger. (He says, still fighting with mytyres.co.uk to cancel the order!)

Actually on looking at larger sizes (e.g. 235/45R17) - they're available up to V & W rated..

Then again, the Omega manual (well, the one I have, anyway) states 195/65R15 as the size for winter tyres for the Elite.. and these tyres (coming from Germany) would mean they'd have been approved for use over there - so you'd think that would satisfy the bean counters here, too.

But probably not.

[edit] Ooh and I did just fine one (singular ) make of 195/65R15 available in V rating.. I can always get those when/if I manage to cancel this (!&£+&!@£ order.

nope.. I generally drive like a "grandma" as I'm usually late..    (this morning was around 170 km/h) when I look at the odo 
 
ps: if you ignore the extra fuel you need to accelerate .. car definitely consumes more fuel when accelerating with them..

around 15-18 Celcius ok.. but if you drive them over 30 celcius they really start to wear fast..been there, done that..
