2007 Zafira Diesel Smoking
« on: 16 November 2011, 22:58:40 »

Hopefully someone will have an idea.

My dad drives a 2007 Zafira Diesel, it starts and runs great from cold but as soon as it warms up and is at low revs it smokes like a pig. Increase the revs and it clears!

Anyone got any ideas why it does this????......I was thinking that the fuel pump is running too rich at low revs, but I'm just guessing???

Change the filters (oil, fuel, & air), then give it a clearout with a bit of spirited driving

Any engine light on.

Usual culprit is the EGR valve stuck open but also check the swirl flap actuators are ok.

Get it done soon as they are fitted with a DPF so it will clog very quickly!

that thing which makes diesels shite on economy every so often, as to clean them, I believe the engines just dump fuel in to clean them.

Ok, we have put the fuel cleaner in to clean this as it brings up a light on the dash when it needs cleaning.

This has been done a couple of times now since purchasing and it made a big difference on fuel consumption and power. This is totally different, its just like the old transits used to be when the pump was putting too much diesel through and they burnt it off  :-[

Is he doing decent mileage in the Zafira to warrant owning a diesel? Low start stop mileage creates havoc with the DPF

Quite the contary, the ECU carries out a late injection which emans that the exhaust temperatures go up, this results in the DPF getting VERY hot and burning the particulates off.

The Zafira does not light anything on the DPF when carrying out a regeneration cycle and a fuel additive will not clean it either. It needs to go on a good run with the engine upto temperature and the revs above 2000rpm (idealy).

When it starts to regen the fuel consumption will drop and the exhaust system can be heard to drone, this will continue for upto 10 minutes.

If a dash light is coming on then there is a fault code stored which can be read using the pedal trick. This may be a number of things but I would expect either a DPF code or an inlet code (e.g. inlet leak detected).

Either way, read the fault codes and post them up.

Oh, I thought they resulted in very bad consumption during its clean cycle?  :-[  :-\

Nope, if it's an auto they usually drive as if they're in Sport mode to help burn the soot off. Doesn't ruin the fuel consumption at all  :)

Are they all like that, cause what I'm going on was from this thread ages ago, about Volvo DPF affecting fuel consumption:

Can't say for other brands, but the consumption on my beemer never goes below 30 MPG, whether it's doing a DPF or not. Also the 2008 Audi A6 3.0 TDi I've also just got in, seems to be ok too  :y You notice with the Beemer that the fan comes on (so it sounds like a lorry), and when you get out, it's hot, really hot! The Audi, I've only experienced one in this at the minute.

It bloody does!

Yes they drive with more 'go' but the late injection i not ideal (hence the heat) so efficiency drops off
