Price differential diesel to petrol
« on: 19 November 2011, 14:52:19 »

I saw something the orther day that said that diesel costs more to produce hence why in Britain it is more than unleaded. I can believe that. However it doesn't explain why diesel is about the same as unleaded in Spain unless they consume more diesel to unleaded and get some more discount?

haven't really noticed the price before now but am just about to make the quantum leap( for me anyway) to a diesel vehicle at long last.

I always remember it being cheaper than unleaded in Britain in my youth. Maybe modern diesel is better quality.

I think the duty on diesel in the UK was hiked 10 years ago when they discovered everyone was rushing out to buy diesel cars emissions from them were more harmful. ::)

Diesel used to be cheaper than petrol, until everyone decided to buy diesels, as soon as that happened, that's when it overtook petrol costs.

What I find odd is the varying cost of LPG.

I pay 76.9 or 77.9 here in Cheltenham, whereas in Bristol or Cardiff I pay 66.9 or less

What's the score with that?  :-\

Greedy resellers on the LPG front I think.

Diesel being more expensive doesn't really bother me. I go twice as far on a tankful compared to the other one running on petrol!

Yep fair point - I agree. I know factors such as delivery cost might play a part, depending on location, but all in all, it's a shame that  especially the larger companies, such as Shell/BP, can't have some consistency!  ;D

A lot of it is to do with competition .. or lack of it... :(

LPG in Cardiff is relatively cheap whilst in Swindon it is expensive ... Cardiff has two supermarkets selling it and about 20 garages/independents......  lots of competition.

Swindon has 1 garage, 1 Gas depot, 1 account only ... no bloody competition at all so prices are high.

Same happens everywhere else IMHO

Round by me jet petrol stations are 127.9p for unleaded and 133.9p for diesel. Now that is low in comparison but despite crude oil prices dropping we see no difference in price. Even when they drop it by 2p in the grand scheme of things we might save 12p for every tenner you spend. What can we do though ??? They have us by the short and curlies for the moment and I can't stand it >:(
