It was quite disconcerting to see how easily it snapped in two. :o

Tail rotor is directly driven  from the main gearbox...... wrap a cable around the tail rotor and the transmission shaft will snap and the flail around .. lots ... which is what I guess caused the rotor support arm to snap right off.

What I find astonishing, and what probably saved a few lives and a lot of money ..... no fire at all !!!

With the engine stalling and the damage done I would expect fuel spillage followed by fire .... it won't "explode" as in the movies since AVTUR is basically parafin ... but it'll burn ....

A very lucky incident

"Underwear trolley to the Heliport, Please!"  :o

Helicopters only fly through being ugly enough that the earth repels them. That one clearly wasn't quite ugly enough. ;)

A very lucky escape, though.

The stresses and inertia involved are incredible, the way the body ripples under the forces is impressive!

To me it looked more like a main rotor hitting (one suddenly shoots upwards)?

That's what happened.
I never read the BBC website, but the TV news said that a cable caught up in the main rotor.  :y
