Front Bumper Bump
« on: 25 November 2011, 14:43:31 »

I was in slow moving traffic yesterday, lost concentration for a moment and bumped into the back of a van which had a foot step sticking out. No big deal for him and he's not about to go for a whip-lash injury claim. But it pushed my bumper back and popped the sides out a little but otherwise its OK. So this week-end I want to get the bumper off and see if I can pull back out whatever is pushed in. I do have a heavy slide hammer. But am I wasting my time? Or is this do-able? Thanks. Mark

I'm guessing you have a facelift car mate?

You'll find that the bumper itself is just a plastic skin, with a polystyrene section and metal bar behind it.

If anything it will be this metal bar that has been distorted.  You should be able to straighten this enough to get the bumper to sit right and it doesn't matter if it doesn't look too pretty as it can't be seen anyway.  Worst case, you can replace the backing bar completely.  Myself or any of the other breakers on here will be able to help on this score.

He's a how-to on removing the bumper...

Actually there are 2 mounting bars that are positioned a few inches either side of the number plate. They are Y shaped and bolt to the body and bumper. They are designed to bend and can be replaced if needs be quite easily. If you do need to replace them then you need to be aware that they are different on FL and MFL/PLF cars.  :y

Well the front bar is well twisted up. No chance of straigthening it out and I don't think my post count allows me to put up a wanted thread in the 'parts for sale/wanted' section on here. So unless someone who has one to sell can pm me please, I'll have to try eBay.

Post your WANTED ad in the test section with a request for the mods to move it to the for sale and wanted section (that is if you haven't already sent a PM to Twiglet)
