Lucky escape - gas hob
« on: 27 November 2011, 13:53:05 »

I have been sterilising some bottles ready to finish my latest brew and just stepped out of the kitchen when I heard a loud bang followed by shattering.  I went back in and found glass everywhere!  Worried I had done something wrong and blown up the bottles I made my way through the mess to find that the glass lid on my gas hob had exploded.

I double checked and I had switched off all the gas from using it earlier.  Nothing had fallen on to it.  The only thing I can think of is the spring mechanism having failed and thrown the lid up against the wall as the bracket for the lid will no longer come down without a lot of pressure against the springs.

There is glass everywhere and it looks like a small bomb went off.  Thank break I wasn't in there at the time!

You have (or rather, had) the same cooker as we have, I would guess you lowered the glass lid after just using the hob?

Ours has just started playing up too, the grill will extinguish it's self every now and again.

Indeed a lucky escape.....

I reckon the glass shattered and then the spring hinges went up.....i bet it was toughened glass and heavy, thats why the hinges need quite a bit of pressure to move them down now.

Best see if you can measure the thickness of a piece and pop out tomorrow and purchase a replacement piece of glass, before the Mrs gets home  :y

There was an article on the radio about glass coffee tables suddenly shattering. An "expert" came on & apparently something to do with the pattern in the make up of the glass can cause it to shatter on it's own after changes in humidity/temperature & exposure to sunlight.

Might be worth a look & glad no one was hurt...except you when the better half gets home!!! Guy. ::)

If he tells her now, she might have simmered down by the time she comes home...

Well it took a couple of hours to get all the glass cleared.  It had literally gone everywhere.  I still do not understand how it happened.  THere was nothing on the glass that could have caused it the only thing I can think of is the sunlight which is a little hard to believe.

I told the missus and she was alright about it, actually concerned that I had not been hurt by it :-*

Now to find a replacement, which is not easy as the model number printed on the back does not give any results anywhere  ???
