Been thinking about getting a set of ramps for some time now as some jobs would be easier than with stands.

Given my Omega has 17 inch wheels with 235 tyres what would be a good choice for everyday use,accepting they will also require some ramp extension to clear the low front end

I was quite impressed with this set of home made ramps made from a plank. (picture borrowed from TR.net  )

I've had my ramps for more years than I care to remember, but they weren't anything special, but I did make the extensions so that I could drive my Senator up them.

With a man enough jack, just place the ramps under the jacked wheel. Dont actually need to be ramps n that case, but readily available.

Also avoids the issue of the ramps sliding away on flat surfaces when driving up them.

Good thinking, but would depend on the jack and how much you would trust it!
I also like the homemade set in the photos - nice job.

By the look of it that's a nice wee bit of welding it on those extensions Andy.

With a 235 tyre would the flat top of the ramp need to be wider...i.e 240 + , or could I get away with the flat being narrower as looking at your picture AndyB yours look less than the width of an Omega,s tyre.

Accept the logic with jacking the car then putting ramp under thus avoiding damage to front valance and need for ramp extenders.

Any ramp strong enough will do.

Not a bad idea, actually. Could get a 2nd hand 2 post lift in decent condition for that money, though.

i bet you could make them yourself for a third of that its only angle iron a few bolts and a bit of welding.in fact i bet you could just bolt it together if you wanted to.

Majority of jobs need wheels unloaded. In fact, personally, only ever use ramps for tightening wishbone bolts.

The landing at the top of my ramps could really do to be a  bit wider, but they do the job. They were bought the best part of 30 years ago, and I don't think 235mm tyres were heard of back then .................. particularly for us plebs at the bottom of the pond

Given the tackle to dp the job, I consider myself to be quite a reasonable weldist!
