Gareth, just a word of warning! My cam cover gaskets have been leaking for ages and I have not got round to doing them.

Yesterday, arrived home, noticing a hot oil smell. Smoke coming out from under the bonnet.

Lifted bonnet. Guess what? ENGINE ON BLOODY FIRE!!!!!

Luckily quickly extinguished. Guess what tomorrows job is??

Yes, cam cover gaskets!

Be warned.

Mayo in the filler neck happens as a result of short journeys and the filler neck being in the cooling airflow around the engine, and possibly 'wrong' oil as some oil brands are more susceptible to mayo build up than others.

As long as there is no mayo inside the cam cover itself then wipe the filler neck out - or remove it and clean out properly - and take a longish trip to ensure that engine gets really upto temp.  Then a couple of 1000 mile oil changes and clean the breathers at the same time....  :y

Thanks I will. Is the cam gasket easy to change?

Thinking about it, I have been trying to keep journeys short because of the oil burning off the engine.
