Got a noise when pulling away from cold.
« on: 05 December 2011, 10:52:52 »

Noticed it a couple of times in the last fortnight.
Start car from very cold at 5am, no lifer noise all fine
Select reverse let car back out under tick over turning towards left lock to get car pointing the right way
Select drive, release brake, apply throttle and turn towards right lock to drive off and get a loud tocotocotoc noise in time with engine revs. Only lasts 2 seconds at the most.

I've tried to pre-empt it by isolating revs and stearing inputs from cold before moving the car but it wont do it then at stand still. Ie reving at tick over, or moving the steering back and forth at tickover, all seems normal. Then drive off as described above as always and the noise apprears.
So it seems to be a combination of cold start, right lock(but not full lock) and applying throttle.... ???

Does sound like lifter noise from the drivers seat, much like Rusty Bullet had. Bag of gravel in there perhaps  ;D

...although it does have a slight element of a squeak to it, so wondered if a water pump pully bolt might be too long and rubbing the housing as the aux belt takes more strain on lock from pas pump maybe? Its that sort of noise. Although full lock is not applied and afaik its the original pump going by the history.
The steering is stiff on this car. Its currently set on a 1 lighter pas setting, cant remember the description, via tech 2 to try and achieve a normal feel from the steering. Its still stiff, but better.

I get a similar noise just when pulling away on a really cold morning. Always have done. Sounds like a lifter from within the car (only really noticeable with window open, TBH), but the lifters are quiet from startup and no reason they would rattle under a little load when quiet at idle.

I have a suspicion that it's a little piston slap.

Hasn't got any worse in 85K miles, though. In fact, I think it's not as bad as it was, or I've got used to it.

This could be damp patches on the drive belts on a really cold morning

try some wd40 on the belts see if it makes any differents

Well, it did it at lunch time off the drive. But not tonight at 10pm leaving work, when it was colder (8.5c) and i had room to reverse out in the same way. Odd!

Have you checked the seat-steering wheel interface?  If too heavy they can induce dragging noises, like knocking.... :D
