And i wonder if a "rain tyre" would be a more sensible bet than full on winter tyres in the uk.

Certainly sc3's are hopelessly apalling in snow. A wee fact about them, in a recent test of winter tyres, stopping from 30mph on fresh snow, all winter tyres had stopped, but sc3 where still doing 23 mph. ;D hopeless.
Please god we dont see much snow this year. Cartainly we havent seen much rain so far. :)

this wonder will last until,  the first time when you pump the brakes on snow or frost ;D

there are all season tires which I dont believe as they are the worst for both summer and winter..

if an economical solution is expected then kumhos and a set of chains will be ok..

ps: chains must be tested and practiced before snow..
While i agree sc3 are hopeless in snow, we didnt all move here in the last 2years cem. Never had winter tyres yet. And if snow chains or kumhos are are ok on frost then rain tyres will be better than sc3 :)

Ps Cem still thinks we all move to the Alps in winter btw. ;D

::)   last year I watched the snow on your M roads from live cameras, or I'm dreaming ;D :y
two days of snow bad enough to restrict travel in the south of the uk do not make a set of winter tyres imo cem. Generally we do not live in mountains covered in snow for 3 months, never minde 3 days. Although Northern England was differant, but even Debs has moved. ;D

we will see this year ::)

ps: dont tell I'm guilty for all the snow that will fall after ;D

pps: how many days this snow stayed ?  ::)
oh the snow stayed for weaks! But not on major routes, it was cleared and gritted roads did the rest in the south. Very unusual, but might be a trend admitadley.

For me if it snows, two days off work is cheaper than 4 winter tyres.

And on seeing your latest post, yes it was cold for prelonged periods. As Kevin will also remember  :-X

Gritted roads are generally enough, although as you say we didnt get general weather last two years. Although as said, locally, only for two days was the weather beyond us in the south.

Would you buy a set of winter tyres for two days of turkish winter?

Yep, last winter was good. My friend has stuck in snow 5 miles away from where I live when snow hit my village. He ring me and asked for help, i told him i will be in 10min. Actually i was there after 2 hours  ;D It was nightmare to drive on snow and ice with my Firestone Firehawk TZ200 tyres. When i came back home i couldn't get into my yard, had to put old carpet under my wheels. Next day bought used winter tires and was amazed how good they are. I got Dunlop SP 3D fitted already for this winter, because i don't want same experience this year.
If you live in big city or big village it's not a problem with rain tyres (if they are good), usually streets are treated with soil and driving conditions are not so bad. But in smaller villages it is complicated, because people don't drive much if there are heavy snow outside, so roads looks like in Norway  ;D I will try to find picture of my street last winter.

this morning took off miggy's sportstars with Pilot sport 3's on
I'm not going to risk them to damage caused by lousy potholey frost damaged roads as happened last yr
So miggy now has 4 15" steelies shod with Michelin alpin 4 winter tyres to see her thro the next 3 months
Just arrived back home from our weekly run to Flamboro 60mls away and I'm very impressed with the ride
Found it to be a comfortable quiet stable ride the tyres have all the indications of being good on ice and snow
will have to wait and see testing conditions I think are due anytime
I thought I'd be able to live with miggy's looks with nicely painted satin black steelies but not so
So I now need a decent set of 15" wheel trims styled to look ok on omega"s
Anyone know of any??

I have been using snow tires for long years , probably a habit from my young years as father also have the same habit..

here in big cities snow falls maximum 10 days in a whole winter, but in january and february it stays on road until the weather melts them as municipalities rarely clean streets (main roads are generally cleaned) ..  another fact is even  in cold months like november ,december and march  with no snow around the late night mist denses on roads and causes frost and icy surface ..  as a result in early mornings roads are full of traps..  and many accidents happen here.. for those reasons I use winter tires regardless of snow from oct-nov to march
also in many situations I have witnessed that they are much better in cold+wet weather for braking..

so my answer is yes.. even if its 2 days :y

I have no plans to get winter tyres this year.  To be honest, as I've said several times, I'm not expecting a cold winter down here.

cem, in the south of the UK, our winters are generally quite mild, usually wet.  Ignoring the past 2 or 3 years, -5C after 7:30am was very rare.  OK, we've had a couple of years of it hitting -20C occasionally over the winter, but the last couple of years have been those once-in-a-generation winters.  And a prepped Omega on summer tyres was OK, driven to the conditions.  That said, I can work from home as and when anyway.

Cem, ffs, try to apply this to the country relevant to the vast majority of members here, IN THE UK. google uk weather averages. And above all check winter tyre availability in the uk. There are non to be had, why? As any tyre fitter will tell you, other counties get them first as they have a far greater need, because they have far worse winters... Which apart from a coupke of weeks in the last couple of years is still true.

Current temp in Slough west London is 9c. on 8th Dec. Forcast for next 5 days all above 6c max13c. Nights all above 3c except tomorow night at -1. max7c

It may well snow. But ut rarely last a couple of days on major roads.

(you watch, we'll be snow bound for weeks now ;D )

best approach when the snow first hits the roads is to stay at home..as not everyone have snow tires :-\

however as a govt programmer I have to be at job especially when  year end calculations and operations are waiting..

last year when there was heavy snow (all roads were blocked) I was one of the few stupids who was at the job ;D
