I have yet to see and use a usable combi.

I think it's a case of putting up with their limitations if you really want to save a few quid on your gas bill. Certainly no use with more than a couple in a house, IMHO. Then again, maybe releasing some space is an additional advantage in some cases.

.. and, of course, in 25 years time you won't be saying that your 25 year old combi boiler is still going strong.

Had a similar quote from British Gas a few years ago - got a "known" good guy in instead  - bought boiler at trade and it took him a day to install - so he got £400 for a Saturday install (he travelled from bristol) and total job about £1000.

He was Corgi as well (as that was the approval system at the time).

We couldnt have a combi, as it wouodnt keep up with flow of extra pump.

Gas boiler at my house is at least 24 years old and simple as simple can be.  No doubt its innefficient and she and I decided that, rather than move, we should tidy the nest a tad whillst time and cash enable us to do so.

Boiler was serviced as per contract last week and appointment arranged for a heating advisor to call and suss out the what and wherefors of an upgrade.

Summarised as change to a combi boiler, repositioned into an airing cupboard rather than in the kitchen.  Radiators and existing plumbing, by and large, remaining as per.  Only plumbing change is the run of external gas pipe and the copperwork to join the new boiler into existing system.  Change of location for this means roughly, 10 feet of copper into existing pipework of hot water cylinder which will thereafter be redundant. Gas supply, however, is an extension of perhaps 50 feet (but thats a guess).

Cost of a Gas Board branded Bosch combi boiler is circa £1200.

Any guess as to quoted completed job price?

I used to run some small letting properties, all had combi's, and my experience of combis is that I would only fit one if unable to fit a conventional indirect condenser boiler. Two years ago I had a Viessmann Vitodens 200W fitted for £1985, less £300 grant from taxpayers, done by a Gassafe local independent. BG will cost at least 3 times as much. If you already have an indirect system, with a hot tank in the airing cupboard, I would strongly recommend staying with it, unless you really have to move the boiler into it. Must have a dodgy install here or something considering the costs quoted. Two years ago we had no boiler central heating etc at all. We had a brand new combi fitted, the house completely piped for the system and the gas feed and six brand new rads, £1500 cash and inc in that was three years free servicing on the boiler (once a year) and 10 years warranty on the boiler. No complaints so far.

Last boiler I changed (for Mrs TB's dad) cost us around £700 by the time the ancilleries were bought, and we'd paid the Corgi guy to test. Bulk of that was £600 for the boiler itself.


I have yet to see and use a usable combi.  Even my bro's floor to ceiling whopper suffers with 2 taps on.  A guy at work keeps saying how wonderful his is, and how its the best thing since sliced bread, but then moans how they have to queue for hot water, rather than use both bathrooms together.

needs a booster tank so one bathrooms fed of that so dont let the plumber throwaway well scrap your old how water tank if you got an ensuite etc theres nothing stopping the combi from filling that up too plus if the boiler breaks down you canb still use the immersion heater

generally we get charged about £2200 for a bolier replacment and about £2750 with rads all inc flues remote stats flushing and the latest mag filter boliers are always worcster bosch mainley 35cdi and thats with a small commission for ourselves and the plumbers fee all,gas safe etc

and beware of BG srvice contracts what you pay them you could replace the boiler every 3 years wich includes a manufactureres 3 year warrenty included imo better off extending the manufacturers warrenty if its a mainstream boiler then service is generally very good plus when things arnt covered BG are very expensive eg one of my clients they tried to charge her £750 to flush the system and another £580 to fit one of these new mag filters we did the whole job for £500 and made a little bit of proffit

I've got a combi boiler, after only knowing standard setups until buying my flat, its great having hot water on demand without having to have it spark up 30 mins before you need hot water.

Never had a problem with hot water, but its only a 1 bed flat not a house with multiple bathrooms.

Also combination of 1930's building and crap insulation, its heating can struggle. But I think that's down to rubbish radiators, been thinking of getting some new ones & having the system flushed 

For a house, I'd vote no on a combi

I just leave my water on 24/7.  That way, I can guarantee hot water at any time.  I don't believe it actually costs noticibly more to have it on 24/7.

My heating is on 24/7 as well, but the stat adjusts temp based on time of day. And Mrs TB knows its not to be touched by female fingers!

Combi boiler now, no problem having both the upstairs & downstairs shower on at the same time and the kitchen sink in use as well.. unlike my folks place, where they have a mixer shower not a thermostatic one and generally try to scald and/or freeze my nads off every time I get in the shower there.

My (circa 1985) flat had a foam insulated tank - the airing cupboard always stayed pretty cool and so I left the h/w on full time like you do.. definitely not the case with a plain copper tank, even after I wrapped one of those blanket things around it (which my plumber helpfully told me do the square root of diddley) - the airing cupboard was probably the same temperature as the hot water and it didn't stay hot long

I've got an old copper tank.....after I sorted the rat problem (they were getting into the hot water tank cupboard and shredding the insulation jacket) I put two jackets on the tank (only 3 squid each form Wickes) and theres now no noticable difference in temp in the cupboard and the hot water stays hot all day. ie hot water was on for 45mins this morning at 5am....ive had a shower, the washing machine has been helping itself to the hot water.....just washed my hands just now, ok its  not 60C but its perfectly hot enough to wash hands etc which i think is pretty good considering most of the hot has been replaced with cold by now
