Emission Light
« on: 11 December 2011, 14:59:04 »

Hi all,
My 3.2 Elite has developed a fault, indicated on the emission light - it appears to stay on permanently orange.
From reading the comments on the forum I need to find someone local to me with a code reader to give me a clue on solving the problem, I am located in Warsash Southampton and travel regularly through Hampshire so can anyone help

Not sure if it adds weight to any argument, but just an observation on emission lights and fault codes from Lamda sensors.

We have a few VW`s here, and if run using Morrsions, ESSO or any cheap supermarket fuel, the EML lights will come on after two tankfulls have been used. If we use JET, Shell or Texaco, the lights will extinguish.

We started monitoring it after we kept runing up bills on replacing Lambda probes, and we reckoned it coudl be down to the way fuel additives (or not) were leaving deposits behind. Never had any emissions problems since, and would always advise a coupld of tanks of good fuel before reaching for the wallet and a new sensor.

Hi All,
The only thing that may have caused a change recently, was the recent MOT work which entailed dropping down of the exhaust & propshaft to fit complete new handbrake cable. Maybe the oxygen sensor got disturbed, but that work was completed a week ago and the light has only just come on.
Perhaps I will contact Kevin Wood as I am in Alton on Wednesday.

Hummm. That is a valid point, I fill up at Asda rather than BP for this tank  :(

Pre LPG, and for starting and when I run out of gas, both mine run virtually exclusively on Asda cheapo 95ron 128.7p stuff

Can`t comment on ASDA, we don`t have their pumps around here.

Many of the supermarkets share the fuels though !!

Hi All,
Thanks for your suggestions responses to my question.
I have now carried out the pedal trick and the code is 0420 which indicates that the catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).
Does that mean a new sensor, or a new catylitic converter or does the system need re-setting/re-calibrating?
I did use some fuel from a garage that was in the process of being refurbished so maybe their storage tanks were low and the fuel could have been dodgy?

standard issue on 3.2's the pre-cats fail, the sensors need relocating  :)
