I have decided I hate drum brakes, but that doesn't help that my neighbour's car has one that doesn't work properly.

It has a self adjuster which operates correctly when the foot brake is pressed.  It should then hold that setting and keep moving tighter as the shoe wears out.  However when you apply the handbrake it forces the setting to zero resulting in that side not being effecient enough for the MOT.  From what I can tell the arm which the handbrake cable pulls on exerts pressure on the adjustment arm on the other shoe, a sort of cross member held in with return springs.

I dont have much experience of these things but does anyone here know what I can do other than file down the crossmember to reduce the pressure on the adjustment arm?

Had one of them years ago on an Cav SRi, from memory it was the auto balance bit between the 2 rear brakes kept pulling it back.

If its a Vx setup (similar used by others) then its essential that the components are fitted correctly or they can do as you describe.

Also, its essential that there is some slack in the handbrake cable for any auto adjustment setup to function correctly.

Is the handbrake lever nice and free at the shoe?

It's a rather french car  , Pug 106, so I am unsure as to whether it is similar to a Vx setup.  The arm moves nice and free and I am sure there is no scope in this design for slack in the cable due to the method it uses to adjust.  I'll try and post a video later.

Has it got the sliding ratchet type adjuster or the nut on a thread type ?

Looks similar to the 1980's Ford setup with two toothed faces (can just be seen on the right side behind the right hand shoe).

Are both toothed faces ok, neither of them smooth?

There should be some free play in the cables of those to.

Mark, yes toothed and neither of them smooth - one of them is new though.

Not sure where i would get play in that cable from as there is no adjustment anywhere else I can see.

As a side note I posted this on the 106 forum owners site 2 days ago and so far not one reply.  Thanks for your input fellas

So it is,I missed looking at the piccy,they will probably need replacing as once they've slipped a couple of times they are fubar

Adjustment is at the handbrake lever end.....and as stated, they do need some slack.

Been out and tried it again this time adjusting the handbrake cable by dropping the exhaust and finding the adjuster.

It is still the same, it just takes 4 clicks to engage handbrake rather than 6.  One side is nice and tight the other seems to 'reset' the tension inside the drum on the teeth.

I'm off to peugeot to get a new set of drum internals tomorrow.  What a trip down memory lane that will be *shudder*

Eh, so you slackened the handbrake cable and now its on four clicks?

Slackened and then tightened to 4 clicks.  Still the same.
