Depending on the OS, the built in EFS (W2K and XP Pro) or Bitlocker (Vista Business and Ultimate)

(I assume it was data protection you were on about, or was it AV/Firewall/spyware etc?)

AVG Anti Virus is pretty good

I'd also recommend installing AdAware, and Spybot Search & Destroy

A quality antivirus package is a start - AVG do a decent freebie, I personally use Mcaffe.  Many OSes have antispyware built in, but I tend to use multiple antispyware - currently Vista's own Windows Defender and Adaware.

The 4 big components to keeping it clean are:
Windows Update
Antivirus
Firewall (preferrable at the network borders, and another on the device)
Antispam

Doesn't really help, the best that can do it deal with ad tracking cookies, and ultimately not worth the admin overheat in keeping up to date....   ....though I do do some at dns level here (own local dns resolver)

i use my PC for business and the best software on the market is Panda, it can patrol its self, and its like having a rottweiler in your PC, you can pick it up on ebay for about a tenner, genuine copy too, the trouble with free software is just that, its not hard to get around also doesnt block every thing, Panda does the lot, spyware, virus's, spam, the lot. check it out

Agreed - Anti Virus Avast or AVG freebies, both good
Firewall - Zonealarm freebie
Spyware, Malware etc - use both Spybot S&D & Adaware - both free

Paid for - Norton &/or McAfee - but tend to slow down computers noticably, particularly on startup
