descisions descisions.....
« on: 12 December 2011, 21:58:07 »

Am currently seriously tempted by a W plate 7 seat Disco TD5 XS which has been taken as a trade in at the moment.  No rust, straight undented panels (bar one front bumper corner scrape) dealer service history upto around 20k miles ago, low miles (relatively) and a heap of toys and goodies from new including heated front screen, heated leather, upgraded sound system etc etc and on a par with Omega Elite spec.  Buy-in price is 'fair' but a team member buy also suffers from corporate greed and will probably attract a premium price given the time of year and the weather 'demand'.

On the opposite side of the coin, my old 300tdi commercial is bashed and scratched to buggery, two seats, barely working heater, is a skip inside but has had the major bits fixed such as wheel bearings, new discs and pads, timing kit, and the rusty bits that fall off have been welded back on. And its due me nowt, cashwise.

I would still get about half the purchase price for my old commercial against the purchase of the new one but its that old eternal question/challenge.

Better the devil you know and all that....

True, but its also the right time to sell one - if you have one.   ;D

My old commercial is ideal for trips to the skip for the rubbish and the woods to get logs for the more popular than ever wood burners and AGA's and doesn't matter a whatsit if it gets scratched.  Its already got a few!  The price to change would not be too onerous, just that unknown leap into new-to-me car ownership and whats not/been done....

that is the chance you take with any used car...but one thing is for sure the td 5 just as long as it as had its oil changed regulary it is bullet proof :y

Engine wise, its fine I suppose.  Good reliability but was the start of electronics and ECU's and so a source of potential probs.

And the ACE pipework and the air suspension - well, thats another wee can of worms....

Even then if that goes tits up, just replace with bog standard shocks and springs, I suppose.

descisions, descisions.....   ;D

Swap the slushbox for a manual/ 3.2 is better than 2.0 16v/ Falken tyres are poo/ leather is nicer and better to keep clean / lose the elite suspension :P

Sorry, what was the question... :y

Seriously, I guess you've got the 300tdi ready for the winter, whereas the 'New' one would potentially need preparing. i'd say if you really need more than 2 seats in the 300 then you might be better sourcing a set of seats for it and then keep an eye out for a replacement posh one in the spring. :y

If you got the 'new' one, and it let you down in the middle of February, you'd not trust it again and might end up losing out by getting rid. ??? :-\

surely price is a consideration, too.

Discovery II are quite good value at the moment - I've just picked up a TD5 auto for less than £1300.

The 300TDi will run happily on old chip fat, all you need is a 55 gallon drum (got a spare one here) and a little work to said drum and you'll have free fuel ;)

I guess it also depends what you want to use it for.  If after a workhorse to take the christmas tree down the skip, and cart stuff around, and to generally abuse, probably better off staying with what you have, rather than worrying about every ding and dirty footprints on the carpets...
