As suggested (Cheers TB) I checked the ATF level again, just to be certain. It was absolutely spot on.

Here are the symptoms:

*Day to day driving - inc kickdown / driving hard - no problems at all

The only time it ever flags the fault, is when I'm travelling at 60/70mph or above - release my foot from the accelerator, and press sport mode (to give it some engine braking)

Every time I lift off the gas at 70, and then press sport - it goes into limp

Previously, before this problem, I could lift off the gas ay 70, press 'S' - and it would drop down a gear and help with slowing.

Now, when I press S - the rev needle drops near idle, and may sporadically increase, before going into limp mode.

that asounds like its knocking it onto neutral? rather than sport mode,
have you tried selecting sport mode before you slow down? i.e have it in sport then lift off throttle,I know you cant
use this to slow down as you would like to,but it may shed some further info?
still think manual box is the answer!!

If I start out in sport mode, it's fine all day long... it's only ever if I select the S button when going downhill etc, that it goes into limp!!

Tbh, I might live with it till summer, then chuck a proper gearbox in there

Codes? Sounds like a missed gear/not engaging correctly....possibly (another) solenoid 4th-3rd(?) or hydraulic issue. Was there much debris/silt/filings in the sumps?

...was this happening as well as the 1700(?) or is this a new development....? And do all gears engage mechanically if replicated with the gear lever...?

The previous code was a P0748 - this never returned since changing the solenoid for pressure control.

The new code, which presents with this new problem - is P1700.

Manual selection is fine. Is an odd one!

Oh ok. Bit difficult to remember though James. I'd suggest continuing old links tbh.
Get it on tech 2 perhaps? Check electrics over...?

Can't remember what P1700 means, and it doesn't appear to be listed in TIS but I believe the P17xx codes are all related to the interface to the engine ECU. Are there any engine codes?

Can you get some live data from engine and gearbox when the problem occurs?

Thats what Autodata gives:
P1700- transmision control module (TCM), malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) request - malfunction. Probable cause: ECM, TCM
But i don't think it is ECM or TCM fault. Usually P1700 is cause of faulty selector switch or tired gearbox.

If downshifting works ok and fault only occurs when sport button is pressed I'd assume that its faulty sport button.

I thought we had a P1700 from the gearbox ECU? If not, then we need to read the gearbox ECU.

Possibly.I didnt realise they both gave out the same codes wih different meanings.

"P1700- transmision control module (TCM), malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) request" and "P1700 - SVS (service vehicle soon) request via CAN" means exactly same, just in different words. Yes, this code comes from engine ECU. And it is really good idea to read gearbox fault codes.
