Dipstick tube blown out!!!
« on: 15 December 2011, 17:32:15 »

2.5TD Engine

I had the misfortune the other day to boil the engine, (for some reason the water cap lid had worked loose)...  After refilling the water and continuing my journey (about 100 miles), I had the oil light come on...

After putting a litre of oil in (after checking for signs of mayo and from the earlier incident), I continued again without any major further incident...  As I approached home, I noticed the oil light flash on again...

I have just had the opportunity to investigate where the oil leaking and have found that the dipstick tube has blown itself completely from the block!!!

I am guessing at blocked breathers and in all honesty, I have no idea where to start unblocking them...

The other thing I need to know is what is the easiest way to refit the dipstick tube...

Thanks...

The dipstick tube should have a securing bracket around half way up it's length.
Can you have a quick gander to see if it's still there/connected? :-\

I should have said...  the connecting bracket is still located on the tube, just appears that at some point the bolt has come out leaving it swinging in the breeze!!!  ???

You need to fix the tube in place or you will damage the gromit at the base of it.
Also if the tube's loose you don't get the correct oil level reading on the dip stick.

The bracket should point rearwards and fixes onto the lower bolt on the inlet manifold forward support bracket. ;)

I've managed to get the tube refitted...  Just need to clean the breathers, to stop a geyser of oil blowing out the tube again!!!

If you look in the maint guides it tells you haw to clean the breathers, I followed the guides and although it took me longer than I thought it was worth it the difference it makes to the performance is amazing.  All I can say is read them then read them again, well worth it.

In all sadness, I have the horrible feeling that the oil "leak" is the slightest of issues...  I have an issue with misfiring (at around 2000rpm) which the diesel magic trick doesn't appear to assist with (although I am going to try again) and a few other bits and pieces...  In all sadness it could well be another Omega in her death throws...  :-[ :-[
