Buying a new lap top, advice please.
« on: 16 December 2011, 20:43:20 »

Santa is being very good to Miss Vamps this Christmas and bringing her a lap top.
Any guidance would be appreciated, especially after TB's thoughts about Acer lap tops.

She is 11 years old and wants this for school work, some daft games, may be a bit of face book etc, she tells me it must have a built in web cam.... ::) ::) She pointed out a nice 'Red' one in Tesco ::) ::)
Would like to keep the budget around £350 ish, certainly sub £400........any advice welcome.........

But, minimum, Core i3, 2G RAM.

Branded, such as Dell, HP/Compaq, Toshiba.

Seem to recall Tosh having a £75 cashback on selected models.

Flick around Ebuyer and Dabs, see whats around.

I guess due to a massive increase in hard drive prices over the last couple of months, thus pushing all laptop/pc prices up?

No not at all with laptops.

Give me a sec and I will see what I can find...

Also, I've no idea when hard drive prices will fall agian - they rocketed due to hard drive factorys been flooded...

Right just had a quick look:

http://www.ebuyer.com/287722-hp-630-laptop-a1f77es-abu
HP laptop -  its £389 but with a £75 cash back from HP. So makes it £314. Which is a very good price IMO.

Another which looked good was this

http://www.ebuyer.com/312856-toshiba-satellite-pro-c660-2f5-laptop-psc0re-02001men
Toshiba Laptop - its £412, its better spec than the HP (more ram and bigger hard drive). That said, for the use its going to have, its probably a waste of money IMO. Especially with the 75 quid cash back with the HP.

I have generally been pleased with HP/Compaq, Dell and Tosh. Most have overcome issues with leadfree etc. And as many know, I give them a hard life.

I tend to get away from those with dedicated graphics, as they tend to cause cooling issues.
