Power sounder. Again
« on: 26 December 2011, 07:16:37 »

merry xmas all,
my P/S is activating on its own and sometimes whilst driving, been going off through the night and just gone off twice in space of an hour, i can only cut it off by inserting the ignition key and turning ingnition lights on and off, never heard it before in last 2 years.

Can anyone tell me how to get to it and what i should be looking at doing at it please, just gone off again as we speak.

My car battery has been getting slower at turning the old girl and just before it was changed last week, it would barely turn during the frosty morns, but as it was trying it would sound the P/S as it turned, the original was a 60amp 620cca (096 type) the new one is 95amp 730cca (017 type) engine turns mega fast now but noticed the P/S is chirping or sounding when i start the car.

can anyone advise please before neighbours start ripping my car apart to shut it up.

thanks inadvance rob

Buy a new one or remove it completely.  For the cost versus the risk of an unknown one self combusting, its not worth the risk.

I split your question from the other thread in electrical into its own thread, BTW.

In fact, I'll combine this one with your other thread as well....   :y

power sounder removed along with horn as could not stand the sound any longer.

looks like batteries were dead barely any voltage tried to replace with new nimh but when plugged back in the sounder does not sound when alarm is activated and leaning through window for ultrasonics etc. indicators flash though lol lets hope any car thiefs are deaf any way lol one thing i noticed though was i grabbed the wiring loom that came out from alarm sounder area to the brake fluid sensor and pulled it and the sounder stopped, let go and it started again, this was prior to stripping it out,

guess i broke now lol

I had the same with my power sounder recently. Got a used one of ebay from a 2002 car, fine for 2 weeks then same problem. I have now removed it until i win the lottery so i can buy a new one. I think the batteries must have abour 10 years life before packing up,but if you do buy new,how long has it been on a shelf? :(

Just my thoughts ... with no in-depth knowledge whatsoever ......

The powersounder batteries in your car have, for 10 years, been subject to charge/discharge cycles everytime you startup/switch off the engine, they have probably had a few thousand such cycles.

The powersounder batteries in a new unit may have been on a shelf for some time, but probably not 10 years as the same units are used in other cars, but have not been subject to any charge/discharge cycles since made.

My understanding of rechargeable batteries is that they have a limited number of cycles before they fail, and if left in a charged state suffer no ill effects of prolonged storage.

A new powersounder unit is about £60 (give or take a tad).... a replacement car a thousand-ish (give or take some fairly large tads depending on numerous factors)....

When mine started "beeping" it was a simple decision .. new unit = peace of mind ... it takes as long to remove the old one as it does to remove and replace with a new one.

Look at it this way .. the cost of a new one is less than the cost of a tank of fuel.

New power sounder?
Or new batteries?

Thanks

Some folks threw them away.
Some folks bought a new one from the dealer.
Some folks fitted second hand.
Some folks took them apart and fitted new batterries.
Some folks did none of the above and watched the fire service put their car out.

Your choice but, personally, I went for option 2 as it kept the alarm system as designed and, potentially, the insurance company/assessor happy if and when they decide to have a visit.

Cannot disagree with that at all !!

Readily available from a Main Dealer, and takes 10 minutes to change it
