Is it the head gasket?? Or....
« on: 03 January 2012, 10:41:32 »

Hi guys! I have a problem that I keep getting mixed opinions about. Well I have a 2.2 dti elite. 130 on the engine and it presurises the header tank so that it throws the fluid out. I got a garage to change the thermastat and antifreeze and they have said your head gasket has gone mate. After speaking to a specialist he said no way, it's steel and never goes. Lvm in north London have quoted me 650 all in to do the job. I just want it sorted if done a good bit to her. Symptoms are heater does not work when parked.. Have to rev the engine then heat comes through pressure in header and fluid coming out. I've read on here about hbv, oil cooler.. A machanic suggested put a water pump on and/or heater matrix.. Any body else had this problem??? Shall I try a water pump? Please help. To good to go to scrappy..

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Thanks alan. I was told the head should be the last thing to do on these so a pump I think sounds like a good idea.

How did they diagnose the HG? That would be last on the list and I agree it does sound like it could be the water pump. Needs testing properly though before replacing IMHO ;)

your head gasket has gone mate
>:( That seems to be the response from most garages , wonder how many head gaskets have been replaced and then still have the same problem  ::)

Good good this is what i need to here! Was about to book it in tbh glad I thought of getting an opinion off you guys. Been a silent listener for years. The machanic rang me and said its pressurising the water mater I think your head gasket is gone. Then said I've got a 2.7 passat 4 motion here it's got your name all over it. Then said it would cost me £1000 to do the head. We all know what he wanted! See I searched everywhere on here and it no way a common issue quite the opposit. See my car has 197 on the clock but the engine is at 130 cos the last ones camshaft broke. I was looking for one but couldn't find one anywhere with black, black leather manual elite. Till a guy I knew said he had one and I grabbed it. 3 years later and new rear springs and 4 new tyres, brakes pads/discs/shoes. Clutch. It's eaten about 7 belts and still squeaks. Id say they bent a pulley when putting engine in. Sorry for long message cos wind rain not doing much here. Thanks a million guys. Gonna price a pump now.

Just had a call from my machanic who said the water pump is seized solid to the engine along with the bolts. I told him carry one and get it off as best you can. He told me if it breaks off and damages the head I'll have to replace the block! Then he offered me the passat at 300 less....I said there some wd40 in the boot mate see how you get on.

The water pumps often require a good tap with a mallet to shift them.

£120 all in not too bad since I got the pump. They had to smash the old pump off. He offered me a 1.8t a6 auto box gone 500 ha. Well the pump is on and it's still presurising up! Got quoted £650 for head gasket off lvm in n London. And of the head is cracked they have heads on the shelf.. Just of any of you guys have a problem. Only quote I have got tho. Be as well off putting an engine in it that would cure all. Seen a bloke on here get his gasket done for 295! Don't know what else to do now.
