Just had what I 99% think is a computer scam!
« on: 06 January 2012, 12:38:54 »

Phone rings, that you Mr Varche? Yes

Microsoft here. You have been having trouble with your computer and sending us fault reports (I have actually as the PC has been misbehaing and crashing from time to time)

Have a look in your PC. Click start, run and eventvwr.

Did that and up comes pages of events, warnings and errors (mostly events) Nothing further back than three months ago when I installed my new bigger hard drive. maybe events etc aren't stored over 3 months.

Then the guy said We can connect you via your computer to one of our technicians who can fix the errors and problem from here (microsoft). OK says I .

Type in logmein.com in your browser and put in this six digit code

The dialogue box had no MS logo.

Smelt a rat and googled logmein.com + scam and concluded rightly or wrongly that it was a scam and told him I wasn't proceding anyfurther. He was very polite  and said fair enough but do attend to the problems or the computer will get worse.

Am I paranoid (no don't answer that!)? Anyone else had these guys

On a more practical note what if anything do I do about all the stuff in the event log? Faulty application plugincontainer.exe version 9.0.1.4371 faulting module kernel32.dll version 5.1.2600.5781 fault address 0x00012afb

Scam.

Why would Microsoft use a competitors product to access what they can already do ::)

Yep. The very notion that Microsoft would give a stuff about whether your computer is working rings alarm bells. ;D

I'm waiting for one of these to phone when I've got time on my hands, as I think it could be dragged out for quite a while before they twig that I'm running Linux. ;)

Scam, I guess too. Microsoft isn't bothered by individuals but huge companies only.

Nothing wrong with logmein - a good product/service.

Its a generic remote access tool, quite popular in the industry for screen sharing when behind firewalls.

It just happens to be, amongst many others, a tool that scammers can use to access your PC should you allow them to.

Nobody can ever know everything :y

You are right to be cautious of strangers asking you to install remote access tools that allow them to take over your machine :y
