Lookin to buy - advise please
« on: 08 January 2012, 11:10:35 »

Sorry for the cut and paste but here's my question I asked whilst introducing myself.

Hi,

New to the forum and not a owner as of yet, i have been offered a 2001 Omega 2.2 cd with 69k on the clock with full service history and the cam belt was done just 4k miles ago, the body work is pretty mint tbh and they would like £1000 for it.

Now experts out there is that a good price and what else should i be looking for when looking at Omegas?
the wifes making me look at sensibler cars after the birth of our 2nd child a few weeks ago, my previous car was a volvo s80 t6 tuned to 323bhp, and the one beofre that was a r34 skyline (sadly missed).

Cheers

Sounds expensive to me. £500/£600 seems closer to the mark. Especially as it is not a proper Omega..... ::) ::) ::) ::) ;)

The mighty 2.2 will be far quicker than this. :)

Does it? Been looking on the auto trader and places and it seems to be the going price, but you guys are the experts hence the question.

Could be right the skyline was pretty much standard, now the Volvo on the other hand was stupidly quick, new front tyres every 4 month and even less when drag racing in the summer

the 2.2 is no slouch and i have had 2 now.....under rated car imo...slated by some on here...but dont knock them untill you have tried it....no it wont be as fast as a tuned volvo...£1000 price seem resonable i paid £ 1500 for an 03 2.2 cd with 66,000 on the clock with F.S.H 6 months ago. :y

Thanks for the reply, are there any known issues things to look out for with the omega 2.2 or any other variant, like I say the cam belt has been done not too long ago so that's covered, how reliable are the auto boxes,?

Cheers

The 2.2 won't win any races against anything ;D

140bhp (when new), pushing a 1.7 tonne car.  You have to rag the nuts off it to get it going at any pace, even then, its still sluggish. Even more so compared with your previous motors, which are in a completely different league.

But for just gently getting about, or cruising down the motorways at 80mph, its OK, if uninspiring. Does provide a good comfy ride that many find hard to beat.

Given the realtively low mileage, I'd say a grand isn't bad, if its in good nick.

The engine is reasonably robust, tends to pop the HG around 150k, and suffer a bit of wear on cylinder 1.  Cam cover gaskets tend to fail if poorly maintained, and throttle body needs an annual clean.

If you can live with its 'sedate' performance, and it floats your boat, go for it :y

its been done before has this
2.2 141 bhp
2.5 v6 167 bhp
not a big difference but you can feel it.
2.2 slightly cheaper insurance but not alot
mpg,ive had both and i got about 2 mpg more from the 2.2 so personally i wouldnt get one one agasin and id go for v6
but as said above if you put your foot down the 2.2 isnt a slouch
2.2 easier to work on
v6 sounds nice  :)
do you follow your heart or your pocket  ;D
the omega is a nice car but not big enough for me now  :(

have to say as loath as I am to do so my recent research has shown the market has dropped dramatically with regard to our beautiful cars.

I would say for sure you should be looking at paying just £550 - £650 for one in such condition maybe even less.

It surely is a buyers market

Price seems reasonable. the prices quoted by others here of 500 - 750 are usually for cars with rust, no history, high mileage etc. IMHO its quite difficult to find one with no rust, good SH and regular cam belt changes. So in my eyes it seems a reasonable price esp if the rest of the car is just as good.

BTW most cars don't sell in the OOF classifieds because people seem to want an immaculate car for peanuts. Not everyone mind as you can see TB's post is a sensible one.

I have a 2.2 and its a nice car, not a T6 or even T5, but drives well enough for me. My last 3 cars were ST220 , Focus ST and BMW 335i. ANd I still love the lil 2.2.
