Extended Plenum: WHY?
« on: 09 January 2012, 21:42:23 »

As per title really. Why did Vx decide to extend the plenum on 1998 MY 3.0's?

Was there a reason, and if so what is it?

Better air flow iirc, breathes better on 3.0/3.2, but on 2.6 because of DBW they could not fit the DBW stuff on the shorter plenum, so that got it too. Remember master saying 2.6 would have run better with a shorter plenum, like 2.5

Yep, there is a relationship between ideal plenum volume and engine capacity, so 3.0 got the bigger one, then the 2.6 purely for packaging reasons.

I suspect it was a cost-saving exercise.

extended casting with just a couple of extra machining ops for the throttles vs. extra throttle body.

My understanding is it gives extended resonance wavelenghts for the mutirams to work better providing a better torque curve across the rev range.

Both setups have seperate throttle bodies.  :y
