Lexus is300. Thoughts...?
« on: 17 January 2012, 09:39:13 »

is300 being the estate version of the is200 saloon.

3litre straight 6 auto. Rear wheel drive. This one has a pop up sat Nav.

Estate seems to be a bit rare, and a bit more expensive. 6k for an 05 with 71.000 miles.

For Mrs G.  :y

Only thing is she doesn't need a 3.0lump tbh. Plus it's a bit juicy. Ticks all the other boxs though. Hmmm...

The 3lt lump was known to be particularly thirsty, more so than others of its ilk and not that rapid. Probably because they concentrated more on the comfort factor. Not much space inside either. but its RWD and reasonably fun to drive. Very little goes wrong with it though. Lots of toys as standard.

The bigger engine will also remain difficult to move on when the time comes.

I'm sure you could get the IS300 as a saloon, for a nice slice of Q...

I quite like Lexus as a brand. Japanese reliability in a premium shell.

That said, I've never really had to spend much time in one :-\ But was seriously considering a LS400 or even an RX as future replacement for the Omega :-\

400 is much more spacious the 200 and 300 are little piss pot interiors with very low head lining.

Not as well built or reliable as you might think either.

Quite a sweet 2.0 though (I6 G engine)

i200 I find cramped.  OK, I'm a fat bastard, but not exactly tall.

A mate had a GS300 (jap import, thus badged Aristo) with the 3l twin turbo. break me that could shift, and one of the few autos I've ever had loose rear traction on 2nd to 3rd change in the dry :o (TC fuse was pulled, as being jap import, TC limited to 110mph otherwise).  Didn't like corners though.

Can't help but feel its not really the right car for her, from what little I know about her car usage.  You know as well as I do, its not a Golf  :-X

I've been a bit cheaky in as much that I didn't tell you all our neighbour has one, although may have mentioned it elsewhere. Which we have both been driven in, and found no issue with head room as I recall, and as most of you know I ain't short. Not sat in the front though.

They've had the car from about 30k ish, now showing 110k and apart from service items, it's had two lambdas. That's it. Exhaust is stainless. Interior is still mint, although they do look after their cars. No rust. Wheels have some corrosion though.
The ride is good handles well, much tighter than an omega, but then most things are tighter than an omega tbh, firm without being uncomfortable, feels planted.
To describe it as an Estate is also a bit misleading, as the boot is too small, it's more of a hatchback IMO as the rear seats are about the same distance from the rear window as her polo. Bit like the subaroo impreza estate. But she wants a Hatchback anyway so that's fine, although she did say the car might be a bit big for her.

Rear wheel drive, first thought was, if it slides she won't catch it, but then realised the tc and abs are far more advanced than on the omega, both trigger about 50 times quicker than the omega does, so that's not an issue.

So, it's a hatch back, auto, quick and punchy low down, handles well and drives accurately with good feel, loads of toys and appears as reliable as a car is likely to get. There's plenty of room for her at least, and if I'm in it on a long journey I'll nod off anyway.... Unless theres a lorry in lane two and its raining at night of course.  :-X ... Oh, and we'll have spend to a lot more to get that spec in a Golf... I would have thought????  And it's not a BMW.

Downsides, juicy, might be a bit big for her, more tax more insurance, 70k miles is a bit high(although she's doing very few miles a year ATM) AND it's not a Golf.

Not seen a 2.0 is300 though...  :-\  which might be more sensible for her.

The 3lt lump was known to be not particularly but rather thirsty.

I know as a mate had one from new, and soon realised it was drinking as much as his bmw 745I??? BAD!! Nope it was BAD when he wanted to sell it, waited 6mnths before doing so.  :y

I had an IS200 for a short while. You can get the IS300 as a saloon. The interior I wouldn't say it's cramped, I just wouldn't say it's massive, it's a little on the small side but not cramped in my opinion. Not in anyway shape or form am I taken in by 'Japanese reliability' they're not anymore reliable than anything else I don't think. Nor do I think they're 'very well built', lots & lots of plastic inside. My lord do they drink the fuel as well!
