Misfire - again
« on: 17 January 2012, 19:10:48 »

Hi everyone, my omega has been nothing but trouble recently.  A few months ago it started stalling for no reason, then it just stopped doing it randomly.  Then it started with a bit of a misfire but not too bad, I changed the spark plugs but no real difference, and then it started getting worse until it was too bad to drive.  My mechanic friend said it's prob distributor pack or HT leads so I changed both and it run fine - I thought great i've sorted it, then it started stalling again and  then about 2 weeks later and misfire's back as bad as ever, no power sounds like a tank and getting 13mpg!  I got the car from father in law and he thinks it could be oil breather blocked/ oil comin through cam cover gaskets.  So tonight i've taken a few plugs out to have a look.  It hasn't been driven for 3 days so don't know how much oil i'd expect to see but the heads of the plugs are dry as a bone, just a tiny bit of oil round the threads.  When I put the new dis pack in it had different bolt holes so I just zip tied it in so maybe the vibration has ruined it it was only £30 on ebay!  Just stange how it was fine after for a short while then came back.  I don't know if the misfire and stalling are linked either, I'm really hoping someone can help cos I really can't afford a new car at the moment!  Any help will be really appreciated, I don't just want to start throwing money at it cos it's not worth much any more, Thanks, Dan,  Oh only other thing i thought might be possible was maybe ECU is kaput and ruining the dis packs? I dunno i'm no mechanic,  Help!

Hi,

Genuine dis-pack, leads and plugs? Could clean the breathers, throttle body and ICV?

I'm just guessing as I'm not a mechanic but it's just a bit I've learnt over the last few months.

Guides in maintenance sec. for cleaning breathers/ICV  :)

Hi, No they were'nt genuine, they were cheapies from ebay £30 for dis pack and bout the same for leads.  The plugs I did a couple of months ago, they were bosch super 4's.  I have cleaned the ICV (even though it looks clean) and the father inlaw, found another breather at the scrapyard on weekend , he's got it soaking in parrafin to clean it out, but he also gave me a list of things to buy including gaskets and seals etc, but like i say don't wanna throw loadsa money at it and it not even solve it!  Do you know if i'm looking for lots of oil on plugs or is it hard to tell?  I was thinking of buying another dis pack from ebay and trying it, at least that should tell me if it's that gone again. Thanks for reply

as ive found out over the last 14 months, the omega does not take kindly to having none genuine parts fitted....lambda sensors, dis packs, cam sensor, crank sensors and maf should all be genuine parts, otherwise they just dont run properly imo... :)

Just thought i don't know if it makes any difference but the misfire didn't come back gradually.  It drove fine then one morning i started it and it was back.  Not driving it, 13mpg is too expensive!

See what a paperclip can tell you, before you do much else:

Yeah the father in law said that, £150 for a genuine dis pack or £30 on ebay i thought i was doing myself a favour but maybe not, still a lot of money if it doesn't solve it though

I did try the paperclip test but no faults came up, thought that was the whole point in these diagnostic systems- useless!

So if no faults, I think you're looking at getting correct parts.

You mention oil. This just on the S.P. thread or in the wells?

Couldn't see any in wells and only really tiny amounts on actual S P threads not even all the way round the thread, can hardly even get any on my finger to tell if it was oil.  So i'd prob be right in thinkin it's not that then?  Might have to splash the cash!

The DIS pack is designed to be bolted to the cylinder head (which is at 0 volt). Because the DIS pack uses 3 double ended coils it might not matter that the frame of the DIS pack isn't grounded but there may be some very high voltages floating around which could trigger a misfire :-\

I did wonder myself but the bolt holes on the new pack just had little metal sleeves inside the holes and that still wouldn't explain why it worked for a couple of weeks?
I might just bite the bullet and buy a genuine dis pack and spend half a day putting the bolts back in- nightmare of a job that was!  My hands have only just recovered!
Thanks all for the replies I think we've eliminated the cam cover gaskets anyway!

I've found this bosch coil/dis pack on ebay is this the same as the genuine vauxhall one? it's about half the price so much rather buy this one!  But if it must be the genuine one then it will have to be, Thanks, Dan

Just a couple of questions.
You mentioned in your original post that dispack you bought off ebay had to be wire tied on as the bolt holes dont line up or words to that effect, is that right?

The link you have posted last to a Bosch dispack again on ebay, does the one you bought look like this one?

The reason I ask is, there was an early dispack that fits to the rear of the passenger side head, with the electrodes facing towards the rear of the car. This sort of dispack is also a different bolt pattern, plus different shape to the last link Bosch one you posted. Also in the last linked one, it is a Bosch Dispack but you need to be aware of the different shaped connection. From what I can see with my phone that one looks like a rectangle connector, where as there is an oval connection.

I am not trying to confuse matters just actually wondering if you bought the correct dispack in the first place.
What does the dispack look like that you originally removed from the car?

What year is your car?

 :)

On the V6's which have spark plug leads No HT problem will registar a fault code. Unlike the V6's with Coil Packs that sit on top of the spark plugs.

As for always buying genuine, I aren't in total agreement with that.
Bosch dispack are what Vauxhall provide, so if you can pick a new one up for £80 your making a saving. I have also fitted £40 delivered ones from ebay that have happily seen 12 months problem free motoring.
Leads from Vauxhall are about £200. You can pick up Magnacore ones up for around £80 from ebay which I use myself and will recommend. Cheaper ones usually dont fit particularly well, too long, dont have the cam cover hole plug part to stop water etc going down plug well.
I would only use Vauxhall spark plugs.

This is all my opinion as I know some will disagree :y

Hi, well i was a bit of an idiot and threw the original dis pack in the bin!  It is the one that bolts to the back of the head and has a rectangle plug, not oval.  The only obvious difference i could see was that the bolt holes were closer together in the new one, which is why i just zip-tied it in place. The car is an N' reg, so 98 i think.  To be honest the bosch one does look like the same bolt pattern as the new one (holes closer together) so prob would of just zip tied that aswell.  I think they changed it in later models and had a bracket so the bolts went downwards which is prob the one i bought, but i guessed the internals would be the same?
Thanks again
