Fuel leak 3.0 MV6
« on: 19 January 2012, 14:29:29 »

Hi all

Yesterday after putting 30 litres or so of fuel in, there was hell of a smell of petrol in the car. On way home, just 40km I used 10 litres. The other 20 dripped out over night. It's up on ramps in my garage at the moment and nothing is immediately obvious. I am just wandering whether there is any particular area of the fuel system which is prone to problems?
Thanks in advance of any tips.

top of fuel tank maybe from inside the boot there is a small round inspection plate under the carpet to gain access to the top of the tank. if you cant find any other obvious leaks that is  HTH  :y

It has been known for the back exhaust box to leak and melt a hole in the plastic fuel tank. :o

The backbox was my first thought as soon as I read the OP, our tank ended up with a small hole in it when the backbox blew itself apart after getting clogged up when it fell apart internally.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I took of the cover plate in the boot, cleaned underneath the tank and waited most of the afternoon to see if I could work out where it is leaking from. The wettest area is at the front of the tank, towards left hand side. I have pretty much ruled out the melting tank idea.
However, it does appear to start from near the cover plate in the boot - I'm thinking maybe the fuel return pipes are shot - or the clips? Could that be so?
Guess I'll need to lower the tank? I have seen there is a guide on how to do this, so that's great.
Sorry for all the what may seem simple questons - haven't got a Haynes manual yet!

Thanks again

The steel fuel line sections can rust and leak where they are welded into the inspection cover.

There is also a breather pipe that runs from one side of the tank to the other, and up to the fuel filler pipe. Might be worth checking to see it's OK along its' full length.
