Body panels
« on: 23 January 2012, 13:08:20 »

I've decided I'm going to keep my Miggy even though the rot is getting really bad, but I'm having real trouble finding new rear panels for the estate, wheel arches not a problem but the ones I'm after is the rear quarter panel below the trim.
Any ideas please.

Hi Ken, it maybe worth PMing some of the breakers or putting a wanted in the parts section. I have personally never been asked for a rear quarter panel, so you may find the actual colour you need which a Breaker would cut off their scrap shell  :y

Add your colour code you maybe lucky  :y

Don't know about the estate but the rear quarter (if I've got the right part) on the saloon is welded on as opposed to plug 'n' play  ;D :y

It is welded in place Webby but a good panel man can drill out the spot welds on a scrapper, remove the quarter panel and use it again although quite a lot of graft involved.

It would cost an arm and a leg to get that done and wouldn't be cost effective in my opinion :(

True enough, but if it was your own car and could be done by yourself its doable(I wouldn't unless it was something very rare and worth saving)

Would it be possible to get a good body man (or woman) to cut out and weld in some fresh steel from scratch?

As Pete says, it's not cost effective. Mine's fully repaired and looks great, but the guy said the only fool proof way of not getting the rust back relatively quickly is to replace the panel at around a grand!

He said the moment you see rust get it sorted immediately and treat it as general maintenance  :y

I'm only after the bottom section from the quarter

I'm going to weld the panel in myself

the breaker has not got to be to pretty in removing the section. the buyer can remove the excess at the spot welds or decided join point at leisure.

The biggest problem you are going to have with a breaker, is finding one that's not in a similar state to your own car mate.  That is a very common place for Omegas to rust.

As it's a relatively flat panel, I would go down the route of fabricating a new piece of steel yourself.  Most of it will be covered by the trim piece anyway.  :y

A couple of productive days would see that sorted :y

Also, if t'other side is in a similar shape , repair both using later lower panels and pop a facelift bumper on it :y
