About 4 weeks ago I started a thread about a Sony or Humax PVR

I was undecided and convinced myself that, after reading others input, that Humax was the way to go.....

About 3 weeks ago I took delivery of a shiny new Humax PVR.....very pleased with it....until it started  locking/freezing up every couple of days.....only turning it off/on at the mains would reset it 

Last night it locked up after 7 mins of playing a recording 

So, last straw, today i phoned Humax....and to be fair I carnt fault their customer service....no arguement on their side (perhaps its common known fault to them  ) a replacement is arriving on Friday and the courier will take away the faulty one 

I shall see how the replacement goes......

I didnt say that.....they just agreed to replaced it without the usual 'fannying about' you usually get........

Have you tried XBMC (Xbox Media Center)?

It originally came about in the early part of the 2000's (2002 I think) and was designed to be installed on the original Xbox (the box needed to be chipped and running Slayers Evox). The hardware requirements are quite conservative when compared to MCE, it was more than happy to run on an Intel PIII "Coppermine" CPU at 733 MHz with 64MB of RAM (which is what the original Xbox had).

The GUI was also easy on the eye and quite intuitive, so much so that MS applied it to the 360 (and they have the front to complain when someone nicks their work  ).
These days it is now available on just about every platform going, and you have the option to install it or to run it from a "live" CD (quite handy if you just want to play).

A friend of mine keeps telling me to figure out how to make XBMC work seamlessly with something like a Dreambox with record-to-SMB for nice integrated PVR functionality.. I'll get 'round to it one day.

For now, though, XBMC is my weapon of choice, too, for home theatre

I must have been unlucky with the first one and I carnt fault their customer service 

Using Media Player and creating playlists works well for organising files that the Humax can see on my network and play  (altho i had to upgrade my wifi network to 150M to stop freezing occuring)

Just have to work out how to move recorded programmes off the Humax onto my network (tho it is doable)

Shame the thick manual that comes with the Humax doesnt mention doing any of the above....you have to google it to find out how.....

But so far a  from me....

I think you should do a how to guide once you have cracked it - please 

HINT: I understand that HD recordings can only be played on/via the machine they were recorded on. Took a call to their tech support to reveal that

Can you post up a 'How to' when you've cracked it?

I am currently copying a TG programme off the Humax onto my lappy....however i then want to delete the program off the humax and then copy it back from the lappy and check the humax can still play it (ie the files didnt get corrupted during the copy process)
IF this is successful, then i will post up how i did it......and its fairly simple really

Not that difficult really....

First option was putting 3rd party firmware on the Humax....but as that will void the warranty, i discounted that....

So.....

1) Enable the FTP server on the Humax
2) Download a ftp client....i downloaded and installed filezilla....free to use 
3) Connect to your router and discover what ip address your router has given the humax
4) Run filezilla
5) I suggest setting the options within filezilla to use binary mode and setting the reconnection settings to something like 20 retries and 10 secs between attempts
6) Enter the ip address of your humax.....username is humaxftp and password is 0000 (unless you have changed it)
7) You should now have a windows 'look a like' bowser that you can drag and drop folders/files where you like (using filezilla.....local disk is on the left of the screen....Humax on the right side

This is a very basic guide.....so if you get stuck give me a shout

Is there a way you can get this from the Humax, i.e. without having to connect to the router?
