The Olympic Games............
« on: 26 January 2012, 21:46:41 »

I am getting fed up of hearing people moaning about how much its costing and the papers and expert analysts telling us how many Billions more it will be.

The war in Afghanistan is estimated to have cost Britain £18 Billion. The total cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is estimated to be $1.3 Trillion (Trillion).

Now you know i have been a supporter of the Olympics to a certain extent as i am going to see the Brazilian Beach Volleyball girls match (with a bit of luck). So i am a little biased.
I doubt that any modern day Olympics has ever made any money and the 'Legacy' it leaves is always a little debateable, but in my view it is the greatest show on Earth bringing together the finest physical specimens you could ever hope to see competing against each other at sport rather than war.

For one month of the year (every four years) people should stop being so bloody miserable and try to enjoy what is going to be a spectacular event.

I have not quoted figures of how many have been killed in those wars as thats a bit depressing.

Personally I would rather stick pins in my eyes than watch it,but if others enjoy it then its fine with me. I (as a taxpayer) do object though to the fact that we were told it would cost around £3 billion ?, which has since risen to £12 billion, and investigative journalism has recently discovered that nearly half of the actual cost isnt included in the official figures at all,so the cost will end up at well over £20 billion.
Im sorry, but to me that is a criminal waste of taxpayers money.
Cant see how the cost of the Olympics can be tied to, or compared with the cost of wars. A completely frivolous activity being compared with the most serious activity of all. Whether or not the wars were justified of course is a matter of personal opinion.

War is good for economy. Olympics is bad for economy.  Both are tedious.

I can't wait for the Olympics to be over, I was bored with it about 3yrs ago,, not to mention being embarrassed to be British, following the closing ceromeny in China.

Why waste the money (that we don't have).

Well, here we go again. ;D
Tbh,I think if he has any sense he will decide not to take it.He isnt being paid it in ££££ btw,its share options, which if he doesnt do his job properly, could be worthless this time next year.He isnt allowed to sell the share options and cash them in for quiet some time,so I suppose its an incentive to make the bank run efficiently, which will be good for the taxpayer.
He was a brave man to take the job on after the Fred the shred regime had destroyed it.Sir Fred  was paid £4.2 million including a bonus of £2.86 million in 2007, while he was in the process of wrecking RBS. Labour giving him a Knighthood was a real bona fide scandal imo,and it makes Hester look like the bargain of the century. ;)
Its actually a small bonus for someone in his position, but he hasnt exactly turned the business around. To be fair though, anyone who restores a bank to its former glory in the current global financial climate would be a miracle worker rather than a CEO.
On balance,I dont feel strongly about it one way or the other.Doesnt seem that unreasonable for someone doing that job,but it would be very good PR indeed for the industry if he decided not to bother taking up his options.I dont suppose he will go short of a hot meal because of it.

I saw that. Mostly crap tbh.The only one in the room with a brain was Melanie Phillips - a very sharp mind indeed actually.
That " comedian" bloke on the panel, shouldnt be allowed out by himself, never mind broadcasting his "wisdom" to the nation. ;)

I don't watch QT anymore. It's just full of opinionated boring bastaaaards who think we should think the same as them, and that Chakrabarti woman. If there was ever a couple of reasons not to watch, it's got to be those two. Oh and retarded members of the audience. I'm a fan of Hitchens though!

But yeah, is anyone interested in the Olympics? What a sad state of affairs having to have that big drug testing place. Makes the whole thing pointless if dishonest cheating bastaaaaards are going to take performance enhancing drugs. They're not even real people if they do that.

Please don't compare the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Olympics, it insults your intelligence :y
