EML flashing on 2000 F/L 3.0 Elite Auto
« on: 29 January 2012, 20:21:59 »

Hello there,

This is a problem which literally came about a few hours ago, when I was reversing I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the EML started to flicker, here are the details:

The EML flashes at random intervals at different speeds below 1000rpm and whilst idling,
While holding the throttle at 2000rpm the EML doesn't come on at all,
Upon kickdown the EML flashes extremely quickly and at 4500-5000rpm onwards it stays on solid,
Under normal driving conditions the EML doesn't start flashing until you give it 1/4 pedal travel and then goes away,
and there is no loss of power at all during kickdown.

There is literally nothing I can hear or see out of the ordinary, the car is running completely normal. Im pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the engine (no strange noises, no loss of power etc...) but I have a feeling it has something to do with the cats? I read a thread about the EML flashing means the cats are gone (or going).

I did the paperclip test and there are no codes, just the 31 because the engine wasn't running.

If any of you guys know what the cause of this may be or if there is anything else you think I should do or if you've seen this before please say.   :y :)

Much appreciated,
Omega V6.

If the eml is on, a code is stored...  ...any other codes except 12 and 31?

has a slightly similar fault. light on/flashing with engine revolutions when cranking and poor start. car eventually ground to a halt. would still crank at reasonable speed, but the dash lights were dim.
threw a new battery on and tightened the battery crimp and all seems well again. can only presume the strange actions of a shorted/faulty battery was the cause.
