Door opening does not activate interior lights. Why?
« on: 05 February 2012, 22:24:20 »

Hi,

Fingers-crossed that this is an obvious fault, but opening any of the car's doors does not activate any of the appropriate courtesy lights.

Pulling out the headlight switch activates the interior front lights. And unlocking the car with the rcl button activates the front courtesy light, which turns itself off after around 30 secounds.

Also, the lights in the doors do not come on (I assuming this is linked as the wiring suggests it is).

Could it be the Relay? (K153). Though the timer works on the 'unlock' process.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dean

I have a similar problum on mine....
But mine only work if i manually switch on the lnterior light at the roof???
doesnt work on opening any door?? (well except my boot light works on opening tailgate)
pull out knob on headlights doesnt work??
ive checked fuse thats ok...
changed my interior light & headlight switch still no change...
changed bulbs still nothing....
sorry i calnt help but your not the only one mate....

May be worth removing interior light & checking for power there...?
Unscrew each door switch & check if any corrosion on contacts as activated by earthing out wires?
Be carefull on estate rear doors as cable is very short (well is on mine) & if it unclips off the switch it will end up inside pillar & a nightmare to pull back threw hole...! (tip when you pull it threw before you unclip off switch wrap a Long cable tie around it so if it does slip inside you can pull it back threw!)
Hope that helps???

As stated, sounds like driver`s door switch. Regards rear doors, the light above each has a 3-position switch, perm. off, perm. on, on with door open, check it`s in correct position

Hi again and thanks for your suggestions.
After playing around with the rear door switches for a while, which appeared a bit sticky, the rear and passenger side lights both door and courtesy have started to work. Still no luck regards the drivers side door.
When I took the driver door switch out and tested it it appears to have 12 volts on bothe wires even with the switch open i.e as if the door was closed. Is this right? there is also no power to the door light when the door is open. The other thing is when opening the rear doors is the front courtesy light supposed to come on also? Any help appeciated.

from memory it should have 12v as it uses the switch to earth making contact with the panel to bring lights on & when door closed lights go off... after capassitor has charged up dimming after few seconds... is the bulb intact in the drivers door? you could try swopping n/s to o/s switches if n/s is working....??

Thanks, I admit I overlooked the obvious bulb check. Doh! I will also try the switch swop.

Just to wrap up this post.
I now have a set of fully operational interior lights :). It was indeed a couple of dodgy door switches and as a reference the switches as priviously suggested act as grounding points for the lighting circuit when a door is open thus completing the circuit.I took one apart and it appears the contact point between the switches metal base which screws to the door pillar and the spring loaded switch end inside had burnt out at the contact point.   Thanks to all for your input.

Good luck with that. From what I can see the power for the interior lights come from the K153 relay. I think it is located just behind the fuse panel. I think there is a post on here somewhere with a picture of its location. It may be a good starting point, who knows it may have been removed?
