Rust is the biggest killer, esp if its been properly used.

Pink Loo-knee is probably your man, though, for advice.

Also, I know the air suspension on Rangies can be expensive to fix, guess similar setup on Disco.

I know it knackers fitting torpedo lpg tanks to each chassis rail due the air workings but other than that not had much dealings with them

Keep your eye on the water level as leaky liners are a problem, & if the air suspension goes, just fit coils! Otherwise Disco 2's are better for bodywork. :y

I've seen the liner issues on a 4.6 Rangie but this one aint been touched and coolant is on the mark and the right colour :y

This is just my opinion of course.

I have done several head gaskets on 4.6 Range Rovers, as yet not one 4.0.
I also would not change the suspension over to coil springs. When the airbags start to leak, people for some reason leave them leaking. This then makes your compressor work all the time, this then becomes an expensive job unless of course you have or know where to get secondhand parts ;)
I think the airbags are a doddle to fit (although making a tool to remove the back ones pays dividends) and cost about £70 each brand new.
Your right about the gas tanks, so would to put them elsewhere. Saw a good one with a half sized fuel tank so an lpg tank filled the other half, also tanks in between the boot panels and rear quarter if that makes sense so the boot space and 7th seats were not effected.

As for miles per gallon, if you get 20 on a run I think your doing well, about 16 knocking about. But if you tow a caravan you will still get 20 on a run like we did.

Disco's you will have to do the small springs in the locks at sometime, as when you pull the outer handle to open the door the inner pully knob drops down... So dont leave it running and close the door like I did ;D. They cost about £5 to buy and a day full of moaning and swearing to fit them.

I personally like the v8, prefer the Range Rover myself but Mrs. Loo-knee loves her Disco. Take it off roading though mate, its a must. They get where you would not believe, would not wade to deep with a v8 mind ::) enough for water to come though the door rubber though  ;D

I am sure you will be happy with your £1000 buy :y

Thanks Daz,regarding lpg I've seen the fuel tank removed and a largeish tank fitted in its place with an auxillary petrol tank mounted in the rear inner wing that holds about 8 gals of petrol so would probably go that route as not wanting too lose load space or seating capacity.
Its my lady wife that wants this beast,(she misses our old grand cherokee but not the shite diesel it had in it lol)so I got to get her to drive one before I take the plunge.
Do you reckon thats about the right money for a tidy non runner?

Interestingly, there more of an issue on the 4.6 (which is odd as they are the same block).

More important is the cam, follower and timing chain wear plus the head gaskets are slightly more prone to failure (being composite).

They drink like George Best on a bender!

Prices are all over the place.. But you will pay extra for a good conditioned one.
If the only problem is the clutch would I pay £1000? Probably if that was the only thing wrong plus it did not have starship miles.

Mrs. Loo-knee feels safe in it, plus being so high you do get to see further up the road. If your Mrs enjoyed a Jeep, I reckon she will fall in love with the Landie :y
