DOS Game help
« on: 11 February 2012, 21:03:23 »

Hi have just got a genuine copy of Silent Service 2.  I played this as a kid on my old C64, but this is a pc version.

I've got an external floppy drive, but have absolutely no idea how to run the game on my win7 laptop.

Does anyone have an idiots step by step guide to help me please?

TIA :y

I think you can create a folder, copy all the game files in to it create a shortcut to the .exe.  on the shortcut right click and go in to properties where you can select the DOS settings.

At least that's where I would start anyway. :y

Depends how old the floppy is, try seeing whats on the disk first, if windows wont see it,  go to dos (comand prompt) and try c:dir/p a:, or what ever the drive letter is.

That message translates to the disk has become unreadable, quite common with floppies unfortunately.

That is a possibility Cem, but every time I have seen that message it's because the disk itself is fubared.

old floppy drivers are rarely used nowadays , so they catch too much dust and become unusable.. last time I try to use them ,all 3 floppy drivers in home, read none of the floppies :(

The disk media is not recognised. It may not be formatted.

This is the message I get when using command prompt.

The requirements for the game are as follows:

"Requires IBM PC, AT, AT PS/2 Tandy 1000, Compaq 386. The machine must run under DOS 2.x, 3.x or 4.x

The machine must have at least 512k Ram, but 640k is better"

I'm running an i5 dual 2.4, 8gig ram on win7 professional.  Any further suggestions please on how to read the 2 disks or are they kaput?  I hope it's not the later as I've only just bought the game :'(

TIA :y

If you get too frustrated I'd say that a C64 emulator and a disk image would have more of the reminiscent feelings of your youth!  ;D

Is it a USB floppy drive or a native one striaght to the mobo?

It's a brand new floppy drive USB external...   I've tried to use DOSBox, but not being very clever with PC's didn't get it to work  :(

No I haven't. Not sure where in the loft I might still have some, lol. Been a while since I've used a floppy ::) ;D ;D ;D

What difference will this make, or is it to test the drive?
