Burst pipe....
« on: 12 February 2012, 19:16:18 »

Hi All,

I think the water main has burst under the patio where it runs from the main stopcock/meter to the house.  There's water seeping out and the meter spins very slowly..... but it'll add up if I don't sort it!!  :o :'(

Trouble is, the point at where the water is seeping might not be where the leak is and I don't want to dig up the place willy nilly!! ::)

I've had a look through my buildings insurance, but I'm not sure if I'm covered, so I'll call them in the morning.  Some one mentioned that there are listening devices to pinpoint the leak  ???

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can offer advice?  :)

You want to speak to your water company about it......i know Thames Water were fixing leaks up to the point where the water pipe entered the house, free of charge. Tho not sure if they are still offering this free service  :-\

Thanks!  :y  I'd assumed that after the meter it's my responsibility, but seeing as South West Water have the most expensive water in the country, it's worth a go!!  :y

It varies, and also the law recently changed - if its a shared pipe, defo the water co, irrespective of if its on your land. Some water companies cover up to the building when used with certain types of meter, I thought that depending where the first unique stopcock was though...

I had a leak a few years ago....water seeping out of my pathway from the pavement to my front door.....i recall the water blokey that turned up to fix it, said he would fix it free of charge if the leak was on my property as far as the front door, however it was my responsibility to repair my pathway if he had to dig it up......fortunately for me the leak was a few feet away from where it was seeping out and under the pavement......so he had to put that right  :y

Worth a go asking your Water company......it probably depends on how much pressure they are under to fix water leaks.....i think at the time i had my water leak, Thames Water had the worst leak rate of any water company.....

Wee Frank Sheehan , our local water man , uses a listening stick  ::)
Now I did what you probably have just done and had a wee laugh at the thought of it in this day and age .
Twice last winter I had a problem with a leak under a concrete floor in two houses that I was working on and Frank identified the leak to within 4 inches at a depth of 10 inches . It saved me a huge amount of effort and mess in fixing the problem.
I often see people smile when they pass his wee Caddy van and him at the back with the stick pressed to his ear ..........
Good luck  :y

I have a similar problem @ the moment, with my leak being pinpointed to under the garage floor.

In my case Anglian water did a free diagnostic dig to pinpoint where the leak was - that was after someone came around with the listening rod.

The repair will be down to me/insurance  :-[.

This has happened to us before at our last house - with the only solution being a rerouted pipe around the side of the house - total cost was about £3k.

The only real bit of good news is that most water companies will give you a credit for loss of metered water in these circumstances. The issue with this however, is that they will only give it to you once whilst at that address.

In the current and last leak the problem transpired to be with the old black plastic pipe from the early 70's - called "Alkathene" (not sure of spelling) - which goes brittle with age.

Hope this helps ..............
