Commonly referred to as the indestructible 'Big Cam' 14-litre lump ;)

Rolls Royce Eagle 265L (or was it the 290L?) was optional on the B-series, along with the contemporary Gardner lump ;)

Last weekend saw the staging of the 50th Anniversary Welland Steam & Country Rally, so thought that I'd rekindle interest herein ..

One of the 200-strong Historic Commercial Vehicle contingent about to enter the arena:

This splendid Leyland 'Super Comet' tipper has been owned from new by Mr Edwards.

It spent it's entire working life hauling aggregates out of the Mendip quarries, and upon retirement he retained it for attending such events. Being a 1969 model, it's plated for 16 tons GVW; is powered by the Leyland O.400 'Power Plus' engine and is a regular attendee at Welland.

Here we are Keith:

Spiers of Melksham ran a substantial number of AEC Mandators for some years.

225 BHP 12.47 litre AV760 engine driving thro' an indestructable AEC 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. 6th gear being a mechanical overdrive.
Ergomatic tilt cab, which was used on contemporary AEC, Albion and Leyland trucks.

Mandator was the 32 tonner, whilst the AV505-powered Mercury was plated at 16 tons GVW.

And here's the 6x4 AEC model:

With the AV505 lump it was a 'Marshal' and when AV760-powered it was a 'Marshall Major'

The 'Mammoth Major' was AEC's 8-legger model:

AV760 engine as standard.
