Putting in reverse blows fuse 15
« on: 13 February 2012, 19:39:45 »

Hi my car has just randomly decided it doesn't like reverse, I started the car at work reversed out of the parking bay and drove home no problems at all. When i reached home i put it in reverse to back into a bay and it cut out and wouldn't restart.

I have discovered that fuse 15 blows everytime i put it in reverse now with no hints of reverse lights coming on and not even a bleep from the park pilot all that happens is the dash lights dim and then go out (when the fuse blows).

The question i have is, is the reverse light switched live as i always thought they were negative, i'm hoping this is the case and all is needed is a new switch rather than something more sinister. as i put it in Vauxhall a couple of months ago due to a relay draining the battery flat which cost me near on £300! :o.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated as the thing is 1 step away form the scrap yard!

2002 2.6 MV6.

As TB said earlier^^^^ check the wiring loom where it leaves the body & runs along the boot lid to the lights/reversing lamps, over time the insulation can break down due to constant flexing/straightening as the boot is opened/closed :y

Have had a look at the boot area wiring and no signs of wear/damage just seems weird that when i reversed out of the space at work all fine no issues, drove 11 miles home tried to reverse into a space and car stalled and wouldn't restart, have it all running now but as soon as i put it into reverse the fuse blows and will not restart til a new fuse is inserted. Time to say bye bye's i think. :D

2nd time it has let me down with electrical gremlins, 1st time round i didn't even have a clue as to what was wrong so Vauxhall had it for 2 days while they "Diagnosed and waited for parts" £300 later for a £20 relay i got the old girl back, Shame really it's a lovely car (MV6 with Elite toys) but getting to unreliable for my liking.

How's this for screwed up?????

Went out to car this morning needing to reverse car, puts it into reverse "pop" another one bites the dust (20 amp fuse), so needing to get the car out of the space i popped in a 30 amp, no dimming of lights car reversed fine park pilot singing along nicely no pop or dimming of dash lights, one car reversed and ready to go to dealership for assessment, Pops a 20 amp back in and for a giggle i thought i'd try it anyway, put it into reverse with the 20 amp in and would you believe it the fuse hasn't blown and everything is fine. :D  ???
