We watched the big fat gipsy wedding last night. Clearly these folk have a lot of money to splash around on tarting up their daughters and tooling up the kids with posh/fast cars.

My serious question is simply where on earth do they make their money? Even allowing for tax evasion they must be making some money somehow.

Nine years ago we were on a Spanish campsite next to some Irish gipsies. The woman spent all day keeping the inside of the van immaculate, and screaming at the kids whilst outside it looked like a scrap yard with two washing machines plumbed in. The daughter and son were stereotypical. Didn't see much of the dad and when we did it was at nightime. Once we witnessed them loading a small road roller into the back of their ubiquitos Ford Transit.

Tarmacing,scrap metal dealing,picking up bits & pieces that are "lying around" etc.Then the bigger picture - buying and selling land,having houses built on land they have bought and then selling the houses....... I suspect that theres some of it we may never know.
As you say, it doesnt take much observation to work out they arent short of money,not by a long way.

Where don't they is probably the better question. If there's a scheme or scam that will make them a few quid, they'll be doing it and, as said, without the taxman taking his share....

I watched the programme too and thought they were  vulgar , ostentatious and of questionable parental lineage . Every piece of footage I see of them the male of the species is always blurred out . This ,I'm certain ,is to avoid detection by the Revenue or representatives of the court ( or nearest zoo even ! )  .
The high morale values they espouse are at odds with the way that the woman ,and more worryingly the children , dress like low flying tarts that even a drunk man would avoid .
 I would imagine  that watching these Gypsy programmes is de rigueur for every budding Paedophile .

Did you notice the enormous steel gates and railing that were fitted to their houses in Rathkeale ?
Clearly they'd have no compunction in thieving from their own breed.....

Part of it comes from picking up old omegas parked outside blocks of garages for 4 years.....hhhmmm......heard a story today about that one..

As Albs says the real ones simply work hard, and I think you will find they pay their taxes, as much as any self employed person does Their overheads are simply lower than ours....

i second that, a BIG difference to the diddy-coys. a genuine gypsie can be a very good person.

you maybe right. im from a fairground familly (pat collins) i did get tarred with the gypsie brush many years ago, i think they didnt understand the term really, as gypo`s tend to be the thiefs of scrap these days. how so wrong can folks be. yes, the true gypsie is getting a thing of the past as to me is the true showman.

I can remember genuine travelling people and fairground type people from my childhood, and I know what you mean.Todays "travellers" (who dont travel) are imo a different thing altogether.

how very true.
rivalry was a big thing when i was travelling, fights between rival family fairs, or trying to sabotage each others rides was a common thing, & that was in the 80`s. all came down to money & who could make the most if it at the end of the day.

I would imagine it became gradually almost impossible to make a living from that kind of lifestyle ? Thus it now being almost extinct.
