Vauxhall combo steering rack
« on: 23 February 2012, 09:16:16 »

Good morning, ive had a look round on the internet and there is alot of people posting about it but i cant find any good info on what to do about it. A guy at work has just offered me a Vauxhall Combo 1.7d for scrap money as its failed its mot on the steering rack he said its clicks when turning. Are these a big job to change and if i get it done at a garage how much should i be looking to pay?

Hi Rik

Looks like a subframe drop at the back end to extract the rack, couple of hours job by the looks of it but don't hold me to that.

OE rack price your looking at £289.80 + VAT

Are they sure its the rack and not the coloum

Cheers

Not to hard to do, as Andy says, drop the rear of the subframe down so you can get it in/out easier.

Clicking is normaly the squib to be honest but, if its failed an MOT, then there must be play somewhere so needs further investigation, its not uncommon to see the inner track rod ends fail and these can be changed without the rack.
