Low ferritin levels.
« on: 27 February 2012, 16:26:59 »

Anyone familiar with this?

Subsequent to a routine blood test my doctor tells me that I have low ferritin levels.

For those that don't know, ferritin is a protein that attaches itself to iron molecules. It is stored in the bone marrow and is used to "top up"  iron in the blood, when required.

The blood test shows that I don't have anaemia at present, but should I become anaemic in the future I have very little iron to "top up" my blood.

Strange really. I donate an armful of my blood (470ml) three times a year and low iron reserves have not been detected before.

I'm not sure what the cure is......Eat more raw liver perhaps.... ::) ::) :)

Yes.....our son is monitored for it.

Diet..Iron rich food is the best bet.

He takes a daily spoon of an iron supplement - Galfer syrup.

Thanks Mr Jimbob. I have an appointment to see the quack in a few days. Perhaps he can shed a little light on the matter. Apparently,  many women with heavy periods suffer with low ferritin levels, too.

My diet is pretty healthy so I'm a little surprised that I'm iron deficient.... :-\

Opti, Iron supplement tablets are cheap if purchased online. Sister-in-law was full blown Anaemic last year and went onto them... Fine now though :y

But she said what they did to her insides and emissions wasn't particularly pleasant ::) :D
