Omega General Help / Air con query??
« on: 15 June 2016, 22:41:11 »
As some of you know I've been tinkering with a 3.2 elite that I bought cheap with possible cam belt problems. I've now got new cam belt fitted, new water pump, new aux belt and I'm in process of getting everything else back in place. My problem is that I had to remove the air con pump to clean the pulley properly. It's now refitted but I'm worried about what will happen once I start the motor. I'm assuming there will be no gas or coolant left in the air con system so do I need to get this sorted before I start the motor or what are my options?

All help much appreciated, sorry if this is a silly question.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'm more or less settled on a shogun sport. I like the big shogun but they are 2 big and bulky and the swb is too small so I'm going for the middle option. Plenty room in the back and the rear seats fold down flat which gives tonnes of load space and I'm told they have a good not of grunt for pulling! Seen quite a few around the 2k which is reasonable and it will double up as a road car as well! Just need to convince swmbo that she likes them now. Oh well I'll land one home 1st and see how that goes.

Just out of curiosity does any1 on here have 1st hand experience of the shogun sport model??

Does it need an MoT?

What about tractor :-\

Doesn't have to have an MOT but I'm hoping to get something that is roadworthy and can be MOT'ed.
Plenty to think about there anyway lads

I know the older hilux had a great reputation but I've heard  the newer models don't compare at all. Where is the line between good and bad?

Currently looking for a 4x4. Don't know much about them to be honest so all opinions/advice much appreciated. I need something with good pulling power and plenty off road ability and a good ground clearance would help. Prefer pickup type body but I'm not tied to that. Reason I need it is that I've bought a small forest for firewood and I need something to pull the logs out.
I've driven discoveries before and was impressed with the off road ability but am concerned they might be troublesome and costly to repair.
Whatever I buy doesn't have to be roadworthy as it will be off road all the time so as long as it goes and isn't going to break my heart is all I'm after.
I've seen a few discoveries for around the £1500 mark that look good to me. I'm hoping to get something for less than 2k if possible.
As I said I don't know much about them so thought it best to ask the more knowledgeable on here.

Omega General Help / Re: v6 cam locking kits?
« on: 22 February 2016, 12:47:48 »
Found the same kit on ebay for £38 so asked the question and both red and green pieces are made from metal so I think I'll give it a rattle at that price. Won't need it for another week or 2 anyway but if nothing better turns up at reasonable money I'll give that one a go

I'm in the middle of the same process myself James. Bought a 3.2 elite before Xmas that had shredded the fan belt. Body is perfect and interior the same, bought for £350. For roughly the same again ill have it up and running again. Too good of a motor to not buy it!!! All the best with yours mate.

Omega General Help / Re: Broken timing belt
« on: 14 January 2016, 21:24:28 »
Been getting prices for the parts I need this week. Are contitech timing belts any good? Is it possible to get a fan belt tensioner with a steel pulley or are they all plastic? It was the plastic pulley that gave up on the last one! Water pump and rocker gaskets been offered genuine gm or FAI, has anyone used FAI??

It sounds like you have a bargain there. We all wonder whether the cam belt is intact. As Mark suggested, remove the top cam belt cover bolts so that you can see the belt, then turn the engine with a spanner on the bottom pulley; if the belt moves, all should be well.

Cam belt is intact and all is moving freely when turned with a socket. Doesn't seem to have done any major damage. Was very lucky though the fan belt managed to snag on the crank pulley and had built up a layer on it over the teeth. Can see on the cambelt where it started slipping so timing may be off a fraction but I'm putting a new cambelt on anyway so can rectify the timing there and as I say doesn't t seem to be any major damage thankfully

The cam covers might be out of shape, which if that's the case even new gaskets won't make any difference.  ;)

If they were out of shape wouldn't there be oil around the outsides as well? I had a good look at them as I took them off and once they were off. They were fitting pretty snugly and as I said the gaskets looked to be in good shape but I'm going to get a new set anyway, hopefully that will cure that problem

That's exactly what I was planning to do Essex Big Al but I thought that the oil in the plugs had to be coming from the head gasket as the cam cover gaskets looked fine. Is it only the cam cover gaskets that leak oil into the plugs?

Yep !  :y     whats the mileage on the ol' girl by the way ?
